Martina Navratilova: John McEnroe was paid more in Wimbledon broadcast role<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

In a documentary scheduled to air Monday night, Martina Navratilova told BBC’s investigative unit that she believes John McEnroe was paid at least 10 times more than she was last year for their respective broadcasting roles with the network.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s hard to really compare exactly because some people work a little longer days, maybe a few more programs or whatever,” Navratilova told BBC Panorama. “But overall, it was a shock because John McEnroe makes at least 150,000 pounds. I get about 15,000 pounds for Wimbledon. And unless John McEnroe’s doing a whole bunch of stuff outside of Wimbledon, he’s getting at least 10 times as much money than I am for very comparable work.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Navratilova, who won 18 Grand Slam singles titles as a player, described the gap in pay as “shocking” and said it’s indicative of male voices being valued more highly than female voices.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to The Times, a British newspaper, BBC Panorama estimated that Navratilova made about 10 appearances on the network during Wimbledon last year to McEnroe’s 30. McEnroe also was paid to appear on ESPN during the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

A BBC spokesperson told The Times that McEnroe receives a higher salary because he does more work for the company, not because he is a man.<\/span><\/p>\n

“John and Martina perform different roles in the team, and John\u2019s role is of a different scale, scope and time commitment,” the spokesperson told The Times. “They are simply not comparable. John\u2019s pay reflects all of this; gender isn\u2019t a factor.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen told in the documentary that the BBC might make this argument, that McEnroe works more hours or appears on air more frequently, Navratilova said, “Ten times as much? I don’t think so.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“For me, it’s a part-time job. It’s two weeks of my life,” she continued. “But for the women that work there full-time, maybe the discrepency’s not that large, but still. And it adds up over a lifetime. It adds up to an amazing amount of money.<\/span><\/p>\n

“So it’s extremely unfair. And, you know, it makes me angry for the other women that I think go through this.”<\/span><\/p>\n
