China urges U.S. to \u2018correct mistake\u2019 on Taiwan<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

BEIJING \u2013 China has called on the United States to \u201ccorrect its mistake\u201d after President Donald Trump approved new rules allowing top-level U.S. officials to travel to Taiwan to meet with their Taipei counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. representatives can already travel to democratic Taiwan and Taiwanese officials occasionally visit the White House, but meetings are usually low profile to avoid offending China.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cTaiwan Travel Act,\u201d which Trump signed Friday following its passage by Congress, encourages visits between U.S. and Taiwanese officials \u201cat all levels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Washington cut formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1979 in favor of Beijing under the \u201cOne China\u201d policy. But it maintains trade relations with the island and sells it weapons, angering China.<\/span><\/p>\n

China sees Taiwan as a renegade province and has long stated its desire for reunification.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the bill\u2019s clauses, while not legally binding, \u201cseverely violate\u201d the \u201cOne China\u201d principle and send \u201cvery wrong signals to the \u2018pro-independence\u2019 separatist forces in Taiwan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cChina is strongly opposed to that,\u201d Lu said in a statement issued Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge the U.S. side to correct its mistake, stop pursuing any official ties with Taiwan or improving its current relations with Taiwan in any substantive way,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a separate statement, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said the act \u201cinterferes in China\u2019s internal affairs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

China urges the U.S. to \u201cstop pursuing any U.S.-Taiwan military ties and stop arms sales to Taiwan, so as to avoid causing serious damage to the bilateral and military relations between China and the U.S., and to the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,\u201d the statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new U.S. law describes Taiwan as \u201ca beacon of democracy\u201d in Asia, and states that \u201cTaiwan\u2019s democratic achievements inspire many countries and people in the region.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s signature, announced late Friday \u2014 when the White House usually tries to bury news \u2014 comes amid increasing tensions between the mainland and the self-ruled island.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beijing has cut off official communications with Taipei because President Tsai Ing-wen refuses to acknowledge the democratic island as part of \u201cOne China.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The travel act also comes amid trade tensions between the United States and China as Trump mulls fresh measures that have raised fears of a tit-for-tat trade war.<\/span><\/p>\n
