New iPhone X Will Remove This Important Feature

There’s no doubt that one aspect of the design of the iPhone X not only helped Apple’s smartphone stand out from the crowd when it was launched, but also anointed a new ‘key feature’ to have in a high-end smartphone. I am speaking of the notch – Apple’s answer to packing more screen real-estate onto the smartphone while ensuring there is enough dead space for sensors and receivers such as the earpiece, selfie camera, and facial recognition equipment.

Android manufacturers have spent time working on similar notches for their flagship handsets, and Android P is expected to accommodate ‘display cut-outs’ when the Developer Preview launches later this month.

The notch is here to stay… which is why I’m delighted to read that Apple is considering removing it.

Yes there are advantages to the notch, and these were all quickly pointed out when the iPhone X was announced in September. With the removal of a physical home key it provides an easy visual reference of the smartphone through iconography, it offers a uniformity around the corners of the device while still providing a dead space for sensors, and as many were at pains to point out you quickly develop the mental ability to ignore the strange rabbit ears on your smartphone.

But the notch complicates design and layout, it has forced Apple to adopt some curiously draconian style guides to preserve the look of the notch and it is not ’n elegant and simple solution’ that the Cupertino-based company is known for.

It’s also an easy target for other manufacturers to reflect in their own designs. And while this does give Apple credit for the idea that is being followed, it destroys much of the USP of the notch as the competition catches up.

The reports from ET News and others suggest that a ‘full frontal’ OLED display is being suggested for an iPhone in 2019. The question now is how the various elements will be accommodated. I’m presuming that Apple is not going to abandon FaceID, so the IR projector and sensor, the forward facing camera, and others will all have to tuck in behind the pixels. Given the confidence required for such a technology, it is likely working in Apple’s skunk works lab right now, so it can go into production beginning Q2 2019 to make the expected launch date.

That will allow Apple to follow the trend set by many high-end Android smartphones and offer a simple ‘all screen’ smartphone with no forward facing bezels but with a suitably Jobsian twist. This will bring the iPhone closer to the ‘nothing but a sheet of glass’ from science fiction, and allow the MacGyvered notch to be relegated to the history books… or at least left to the Android wannabe crowd.

The question for Apple CEO Tim Cook is if the removal of the notch will be enough to turn around the falling sales of the iPhone.
