It&#8217;s unclear how the gun made it on campus and who fired the shots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Officers told AL.com that the shooting may have been accidental.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said the deceased student would have turned 18 in about 30 days and was a senior \u201cwho had aspirations and dreams to be a nurse.\u201d He added, \u201cWe are not just talking about some person, (we\u2019re) talking about losing a part of our future. Our hearts are heavy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Neither student was immediately identified, and police say they are seeking surveillance video and witnesses to determine what had happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Some students told WVTM, a local NBC affiliate, they heard the gunshots and ran from the school. Many said the whole incident reminded them of the high school shooting last month in Parkland, Fla., which left 17 dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Worried parents rushed to the school as the campus was placed on lockdown. Photos on social media showed students huddling under desks and using their cell phones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">One mother anxiously waiting outside the school told AL.com that her daughter had texted her about the lockdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">&#8220;I was just hoping my baby was OK, that everybody was OK,&#8221; the mother said. &#8220;I was nervous.
