Oscars Red Carpet Fashion 2018: Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep Make Strong Statements<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s contagious,\u201d said Ashley Judd on the Oscars red carpet. She wasn\u2019t only referring to the impact of the #MeToo and Time\u2019s Up movements, but the joy that she\u2019s gotten from women all over the world, not just in the entertainment business, banding together in an effort to end sexual harassment in the workplace. \u201cYou can\u2019t help but feel joy when girls and women support one another.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Judd was walking the red carpet at the 90th Academy Awards, held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with Mira Sorvino, another actress who first spoke out about her experiences with harassment. The past Oscar winner had happy tears in her eyes when she described what it\u2019s like to be back.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t single any one film out, but it\u2019s such a wonderful feeling to be celebrating all these amazing films,\u201d she said, before adding that she\u2019s a fan of Guillermo del Toro, director of \u201cThe Shape of Water.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The positivity and strength the two actresses homed in on translated into the gowns worn on the red carpet: strong (as in shoulders, silhouettes and fabric) and bright (as in white or color or bling). Gone was the all-black Golden Globes and BAFTA dress code \u2014 not a surprise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Actresses were ready for their Oscar close-ups in a parade of color \u2014 from Saoirse Ronan\u2019s pale pink Calvin Klein and Viola Davis\u2019 bright peony Michael Kors, to Meryl Streep in a red Dior gown and Nicole Kidman in cobalt Armani Priv\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just liked it,\u201d shrugged Kidman, though there likely was more thought put into it than that. The sharp, structured and voluminous lines of the gown were classic Armani \u2014 and exemplary of the most prevalent trends on the carpet \u2014 but the show-stopping color most certainly was chosen with statement-making in mind. In a long season of red carpet wins, Kidman has stuck mostly with slender silhouettes to match her enviable frame, so it seemed she decided to go big or go home on the big day.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bright white that many major attendees wore \u2014 nominees Margot Robbie in Chanel and Mary J. Blige in Atelier Versace; Jane Fonda in Balmain, and Laura Dern in Calvin Klein \u2014 could also be seen as a political and social statement, much as it was at the Grammys and the State of the Union.<\/span><\/p>\n

The men were also on theme, exemplified by Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u2019s all-white Berluti tux.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, there were the obligatory pale pink and sparkly princess gowns \u2014 Allison Williams, Gina Rodriguez and Sorvino \u2014 and slinky gold numbers \u2014 Jennifer Lawrence in Dior and Lupita Nyong\u2019o in Versace \u2014 but there were also some actresses taking calculated risks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emily Blunt\u2019s pale blue Schiaparelli is to sure to be polarizing among couch critics and beloved among fashion insiders, as will Salma Hayek\u2019s over-the-top Gucci. But how could one not love the verve with which she wore it? \u201cIt\u2019s all about this,\u201d she said, gesturing to her ample bosom. Of the sequins on top of velvet on top of rhinestones, she reminded that the Oscars are, after all, a celebration of showbiz. She even said, tongue firmly in cheek, \u201cIt\u2019s going to light up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
