iPhone X Plus Leak Reveals Apple’s Old-Fashioned Gamble<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

How do you make up for an under performing smartphone that should have boosted sales on the tenth anniversary of your debut? In Apple\u2019s case – as it reportedly cuts the number of handset sales in Q1 2018 by fifty percent – the answer appears to be the same old-fashioned gamble it made with the introduction of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus\u2026 go larger.<\/span><\/p>\n

The latest information on 2018\u2019s iPhone family comes from serial leaker Ming-Chi Kuo (as reported yesterday by Forbes’ Gordon Kelly) who suggests three models are on their way – a direct replacement for the iPhone X, a \u2018budget\u2019 version of the iPhone X using a 6 inch LCD screen, and a larger iPhone X Plus with a near 6.5 inch screen.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s tacit confirmation of the later from the supply chain today as both a standalone digitizer and a tray of the same component appeared online.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhy would these screens be leaking now, some seven months before an expected launch of the iPhone X Plus? Because Apple is pulling its classic divide and conquer trick on its suppliers – as Samsung struggles with the excess OLED screen capacity for the 5.8 inch iPhone X, Apple is looking to use LG Display\u2019s factories to manufacture the 6.5 inch OLED screen for the iPhone X Plus. That\u2019s going to require some significant samples for testing and approval by Cupertino, hence the number of units already in the leaky supply chain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apple is facing down another year-on-year fall in the number of iPhones sold. It hasn\u2019t seen a rise in until sales since the 2014\/2015 production cycle. Co-incidentally that rise was attributed to the launch of the \u2018Plus\u2019 handsets, which brought the iPhone handsets close to equalling the voluminous screens of high-end Android handsets as well as increasing the screen size of the regular iPhone.<\/span><\/p>\n

That sales level has never been reached <\/span>again, and remains the high water mark of unit sales. And while revenue remains high, falling sales should not be ignored. 2017 saw three handsets launched to replace the two handsets in 2016, but these did not arrest the downward year-on-year trend in the fourth calendar quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rather than work on a new idea or approach, Apple is going to redeploy the only move that has worked in the recent past.<\/span><\/p>\n
