‘Three Billboards’ leads the pack at politically edged BAFTA awards<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Dark comedy \u201cThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri\u201d was the biggest winner at the BAFTA Film Awards, held in London on Sunday, an event which saw the campaign for women\u2019s rights in the entertainment industry take center stage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThree Billboards\u201d won five awards, including best film, best actress for its lead performer Frances McDormand and a supporting actor award for Sam Rockwell. Writer-director Martin McDonagh also won for the film\u2019s original screenplay.<\/span><\/p>\n

The U.S.-set film also won the best British film honors, qualifying on the basis of its creative team and the companies involved in producing it, many of whom are British.<\/span><\/p>\n

Though \u201cThree Billboards\u201d took home the most trophies, it did not dominate proceedings, with a number of critically well-received films also garnering recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mexican director Guillermo del Toro took the directing honors for his fantasy \u201cThe Shape of Water,\u201d Gary Oldman took the top male acting prize for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in \u201cDarkest Hour,\u201d and Allison Janney was honored for her supporting turn in \u201cI, Tonya.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pixar animation \u201cCoco\u201d won for best animated film, while Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cDunkirk\u201d won for best sound, and Edgar Wright\u2019s \u201cBaby Driver\u201d won for editing. Daniel Kaluuya, the British star of \u201cGet Out\u201d took the rising star award.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cTime\u2019s Up\u201d campaign against sexual misconduct was a recurring theme throughout the evening. Many of the female attendees wore black outfits in a gesture of protest.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his acceptance speech, McDonagh expressed the hope that such protests would bring about change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur film is a hopeful one in lots of ways but it\u2019s also an angry one, and as we\u2019ve seen this year, sometimes anger is the only way to get people to listen and to change, so we\u2019re thrilled that BAFTA has recognized this,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, many in attendance wore badges citing the campaign against sexual harassment, while honorees and presenters, including Sam Rockwell and British actress Lily James expressed support for the movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The night\u2019s biggest female winner, McDormand, did not join in the sartorial protest, saying in her acceptance speech that though she supported the movement, she had \u201ca little trouble with compliance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Other notable winners included cinematographer Roger Deakins, who won for his work on \u201cBlade Runner 2049.\u201d Deakins is also nominated at next month\u2019s Academy Awards for his work on the film.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has been nominated 13 times for Oscars prior to his nomination this year, but has never won before, giving him more unsuccessful nominations than any other cinematographer in Oscars history.<\/span><\/p>\n
