Latina GOP rep warns the party is becoming too white<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The first Latina elected to Congress said Sunday the GOP is in danger of becoming a marginalized party without a broader appeal beyond older, white men.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think that we would be foolish to not see that we\u2019re heading into trouble,\u201d Rep. Ilena Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) told CBS\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation\u201d Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n

First elected in 1989, Ros-Lehtinen warned that \u201cfew women\u201d and minorities are running as Republicans and there\u2019s not enough effort to recruit diverse candidates or appeal to young voters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo the growth of our party seems to be very limited in a specific group, whereas the demographics of our great country is changing greatly,\u201d Ros-Lehtinen said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you look ahead, what\u2019s our future going to be? Are we going to end up a marginalized party? I think that we need to look toward the future, and we need to have the policies that attract millennials, women and minorities. I don\u2019t see that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ros-Lehtinen joined three other retiring GOP members of Congress for a segment on why they are calling it quits when Republicans have full control of the government.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Pa.) blamed President Trump for making certain groups feel unwelcome in the GOP.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt starts at the top,\u201d Dent said. \u201cWhen the president makes incendiary comments on Hispanics, Muslims, women, you know\u2013 the Charlottesville situation, and others, you know, it narrows our appeal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s typical for the party in power to lose seats during a midterm, but Republicans are also dealing with a wave of retirements, resignations and bids for higher office. There\u2019s 44 GOP departures in the House and Senate this term, according to the House Press Gallery tally.<\/span><\/p>\n

The outgoing reps said the party is not as accepting of moderate positions and lamented the GOP has lost its way.<\/span><\/p>\n

The party is \u201creally about loyalty to the man (Trump) more than it is about any set of given principles or ideals. And I think that\u2019s what\u2019s really changed,\u201d Dent said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Retiring Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said the GOP\u2019s narrow appeal puts the party in \u201cdanger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe behavior that the president has exhibited\u2013 I think it makes it very difficult for young people to identify with the Republican Party,\u201d Flake said. \u201cI think they\u2019ve been walking away from the party, in general. I think they\u2019re at a dead sprint right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
