{"id":58840,"date":"2018-02-14T12:03:51","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T12:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=58840"},"modified":"2018-02-14T12:03:51","modified_gmt":"2018-02-14T12:03:51","slug":"taylor-swift-shakes-off-copyright-lawsuit-over-hit-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/entertainment\/taylor-swift-shakes-off-copyright-lawsuit-over-hit-song.html","title":{"rendered":"Taylor Swift shakes off copyright lawsuit over hit song"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Taylor Swift shakes off copyright lawsuit over hit song<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">A lawsuit accusing singer Taylor Swift of stealing lyrics for her song \u201cShake It Off\u201d was thrown out on Tuesday by a judge, who ruled the phrases in question were not sufficiently original to merit copyright protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Swift\u2019s 2014 song reached No. 1 on the pop charts and marked her evolution from country to pop music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Two songwriters said in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed in federal court in Los Angeles last year that Swift\u2019s song was based on the phrase \u201cplayers, they gonna play, and haters, they gonna hate,\u201d that they coined for a 2001 song \u201cPlayas Gon\u2019 Play\u201d by R&amp;B girl group 3LW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Swift\u2019s lyrics from the chorus of \u201cShake It Off\u201d are, \u201cthe players gonna play, play, play, play, play, and the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Attorneys for Swift asked U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald in January to dismiss the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u201cIn order for such short phrases to be protected under the Copyright Act, they must be more creative than the lyrics at issue here,\u201d Fitzgerald ruled, according to court papers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The songwriters who sued Swift &#8211;
