Joyce said he did not break any rules because Campion was not his \u201cpartner\u201d at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The scandal could have major repercussions for Australia\u2019s center-right government. If Joyce does resign from parliament, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will lose his razor-thin one seat majority in parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u201cI am very aware of the ministerial code of conduct. It is without a shadow of a doubt that Vikki Campion is my partner now, but when she worked in my office, she was not my partner. When she worked in Matt Canavan\u2019s office, she was not my partner,\u201d Joyce told reporters in Canberra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Joyce said in a later emailed statement that a friendship developed with Campion after she joined his staff and that \u201cbecame, over time, more\u201d without specifying when the affair started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">He also attempted to shield Turnbull from the fallout, saying he did not discuss Campion\u2019s employment changes with the prime minister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Australia\u2019s opposition Labor Party rejected Joyce\u2019s explanation, insisting the country\u2019s own welfare standards would accept Campion as the deputy PM\u2019s \u201cpartner\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Although Joyce\u2019s explanation may see him avoid any official rebuke, his account is unlikely to win favor with the government\u2019s traditional conservative voters on whom the deputy PM\u2019s future now rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u201cIt will depend on what the court of public opinion makes of all of this. If there is a dramatic find in the opinion polls then it could be that he has to resign,\u201d said Nick Economou, senior lecturer in Australian politics at Monash University in Melbourne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Even if Joyce survives, the scandal will likely tarnish Turnbull\u2019s re-election prospects with conservative voters in a national election just over a year away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Joyce has for a week sought to bat away questions of his relationship with Campion, insisting it was not in the public interest.
