But Mr. Moye, who also went by the last name d\u2019Baha, had spent years fighting for racial equality as an activist and protester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The police found Mr. Moye bleeding near a mountain bike on Bienville Street in New Orleans shortly after 1 a.m. on Tuesday. He had been shot in the leg, and the police report said officers followed a trail of blood that led them back to a bullet fragment a few blocks away from where Mr. Moye was found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his wounds, and the Orleans Parish Coroner\u2019s Office called the death a homicide. It remains unclear whether Mr. Moye was intentionally targeted, and the police did not answer questions about whether any suspect had been identified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u201cThe incident is the subject of an active and ongoing investigation,\u201d said Beau Tidwell, a spokesman for the New Orleans Police Department. New Orleans has one of the highest murder rates in the United States, with 157 murders in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Mr. Moye was originally from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., but lived in the Charleston area and was visiting New Orleans at the time of his death, his sister Kimberli Duncan, 46, said in a phone interview on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u201cHe was always fighting for justice, equality and fairness,\u201d she said. \u201cHe always wanted to do for others. He never put himself first.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">In 2015, Mr. Moye demonstrated on behalf of the family of Walter Scott, an unarmed black man who was fatally shot by a police officer in North Charleston that April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Two months after that, nine black churchgoers in Charleston were murdered by the white supremacist Dylann S. Roof. Mr. Moye participated in demonstrations and spoke to news outlets about the history of racial inequality in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">And when Donald J. Trump went to Mount Pleasant, a city near Charleston, for a campaign rally in December 2015, calling for \u201ca complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,\u201d Mr. Moye was there, too, in protest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u201cYou would think we\u2019d learn from history,\u201d he told The New York Times, adding that his father was a Muslim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Last year, when Mr. Moye tried to wrest the Confederate flag from a demonstrator, he did not succeed. The police surrounded him, eventually bringing him down to the ground and then arresting him.
