{"id":58218,"date":"2018-02-07T06:08:55","date_gmt":"2018-02-07T06:08:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=58218"},"modified":"2018-02-07T06:08:55","modified_gmt":"2018-02-07T06:08:55","slug":"german-coalition-negotiators-push-through-until-dawn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/world-news\/german-coalition-negotiators-push-through-until-dawn.html","title":{"rendered":"German coalition negotiators push through until dawn"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">German coalition negotiators push through until dawn<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">German Chancellor Angela Merkel\u2019s conservatives and the Social Democrats (SPD) negotiated through the night into Wednesday in a marathon final push to try to nail down a new coalition agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Negotiators from the two blocs remained locked in talks just before dawn at the headquarters of Merkel\u2019s Christian Democrats, where they began meeting at 10 a.m. (0900 GMT) on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Merkel\u2019s failure to cobble together a government more than four months after a national election has raised concerns among investors and partner countries at a time when Europe is facing multiple challenges &#8211; including the need for euro zone reform and Britain\u2019s departure from the European Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The SPD suffered its worst result in last September\u2019s national election since Germany became a federal republic in 1949 and initially vowed to rebuild in opposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">However, party leader Martin Schulz changed course and opened negotiations with Merkel after she failed to clinch a coalition deal with two smaller parties in November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Vowing to negotiate until the conservatives \u201csqueal\u201d, the SPD has been trying to extract concessions on healthcare and employment policy that could win over skeptics among its 464,000 members, who get the final say on whether to go ahead with the coalition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Sources involved in the negotiations said the conservative bloc had reopened topics that had previously been agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Both Merkel\u2019s conservative bloc and the SPD are under pressure not to concede too much in the negotiations or see their support ebb further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">An Insa poll on Monday showed support for the SPD dropping to 17 percent, below its election result of 20.5 percent.
