Ivanka Trump sees in dad a ‘genius’ that rivets her, White House reporter says<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Ivanka Trump believes her father is a \u201cgenius\u201d that mesmerizes her, according to White House correspondent Maggie Haberman.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe does believe that he\u2019s got a genius,\u201d Haberman told Katie Couric\u2019s podcast on Thursday. \u201cShe believes that there are things that he can intuit that other people can\u2019t. And she is very riveted by it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Haberman has covered Donald Trump for years, previously for Politico and since 2015 for The New York Times, which the president loves to accuse of \u201cfake news.\u201d She discussed both the president and his older daughter in a wide-ranging interview with Couric, offering her assessments of Donald Trump\u2019s ideology and Michael Wolff\u2019s tell-all book about the White House.<\/span><\/p>\n

Haberman said that Ivanka Trump has become the \u201cspitting image\u201d of her father, even though the two have had policy differences.<\/span><\/p>\n

She \u201chas gone from being sort of a somewhat resentful daughter to really being, in many ways, the spitting image of him \u2014 not physically, obviously,\u201d said Haberman. \u201cBut she\u2019s him without a lot of the flash and style.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The first daughter has a \u201cvery similar set of grievances,\u201d according to Haberman. \u201cShe has a very similar sense that people are being unfair to her,\u201d the journalist added.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLike him, she believed that they would walk in and be treated deferentially, and she\u2019s been a little surprised at how D.C. actually is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But Jared Kushner and his wife are \u201cvery different people,\u201d Haberman observed. \u201cJared is very sort of chill and flat, and speaks as little as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Haberman, who was writing political stories about Donald Trump back in 2011 and witnessed him breathe life into the birther attack on President Barack Obama, said that Trump didn\u2019t have a strategy during his presidential campaign and doesn\u2019t have an ideology now.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf people wanted to believe during the campaign that there was a strategy, that\u2019s fine. But there wasn\u2019t a strategy. He did things because it felt good to him or because he liked it or because it was fun,\u201d she told Couric.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for his political beliefs, \u201cthere is no ideology,\u201d Haberman said. Trump is \u201cperfectly comfortable being inconsistent on policy. He is perfectly comfortable taking two conflicting positions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Couric asked about the accuracy of Wolff\u2019s book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House. She summarized several points in the book: Trump \u201cdoesn\u2019t read, he is semi-literate, he doesn\u2019t prepare, he knows almost nothing about policy or politics, he\u2019s extremely moody, thin-skinned.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
