2 men killed in West Woodlawn; 1st shooting deaths in Chicago in 6 days<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Two people were killed Thursday morning in Chicago’s first deadly shooting in six days.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two men, ages 27 and 36, were sitting in a car in the 6600-block of South Evans Avenue in the city’s West Woodlawn neighborhood around 2:50 a.m. That’s when police said someone walked up to the vehicle and opened fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

The younger man was shot in the chest. The older man was shot in his left side. They were both transported to Stroger Hospital, where they both died. Their identities have not yet been released.<\/span><\/p>\n

The city has made some progress in the last year fighting gun violence. The Chicago Police Department is sharing its strategies with top cops from around the country at a two-day conference this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2018 National Crime-Fighters Conference was held at the University of Chicago Crime Lab. CPD Superintendent Eddie Johnson was scheduled to speak Thursday afternoon about some of the measures that seem to be working for Chicago police, including predictive technology and decentralized nerve centers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The progress is a positive for Chicago, but that’s not to say no one was hurt during the six-day stretch without a shooting death. Over the long holiday weekend alone, 25 people were wounded by guns across the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chicago goes 6 days without fatal shooting<\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time since March of last year, Chicago went six full days without a deadly shooting.<\/span><\/p>\n

The city’s last fatal shooting happened at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 11, when 33-year-old Uriah Hughes was killed and a 26-year-old man was wounded in an Austin neighborhood shooting on the West Side.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hughes and the other man were getting into a vehicle in the 5300 block of West Race when they heard gunfire and were shot, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hughes was shot multiple times and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died within the hour, authorities said. No fatal shootings have been reported in the city since then.<\/span><\/p>\n

The city ended the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend by marking five days without a fatal shooting Tuesday morning. Over the long weekend, 25 people were wounded in shootings across the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also over the weekend, a man was found dead with cuts all over his body Sunday morning in the West Pullman neighborhood on the South Side. Kendrick L. Williams, 26, was found unresponsive at 10:37 a.m. in the 11900 block of South Harvard with cuts to the head and wounds to both arms and one of his legs, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy Tuesday found Williams died of multiple injuries from an assault and his death was ruled a homicide. Area South detectives are investigating.<\/span><\/p>\n

The last time Chicago went six days without any fatal shootings was between Feb. 26 and March 6, 2017, when the city reached eight full days without any shooting deaths, according to Chicago Sun-Times records.<\/span><\/p>\n

James Morris, 23, was shot at 10:48 a.m. Feb. 26 in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side and died about 30 minutes later; and Clarence Hart was shot at 6:30 p.m. March 6 in the Southwest Side Chicago Lawn neighborhood and died about 30 minutes later, authorities said.<\/span><\/p>\n

So far in 2018, there have been at least 19 homicides in the city, including a 29-year-old woman who died New Year’s Day in a North Side assault and a 1-year-old girl who died of multiple injuries from child abuse, according to Chicago Sun-Times records and the medical examiner’s office. Sixteen of those homicides were shooting deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n
