style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">An Australian man in a homemade sailing boat has been rescued off the coast of Hawaii 104 days into a daring solo voyage home from Panama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The 62-year-old sailor had been attempting to reach Australia \u2013 a total distance of more than 14,000km \u2013 in a 9-metre boat with no engine or communications equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Blown off course by rough weather, the lone sailor was forced into Hawaiian waters when he flagged down a commercial passenger vessel around six kilometres from Maui on Sunday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">He had been battling winds of up to 37kph and swells of over one metre at the time of his rescue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The man, who has not been identified, appeared disoriented and was having trouble making his way into port, the crew of the Trilogy V told authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">As well as lacking a VHF radio and other communications equipment, the sails of the vessel were in poor condition according to the US Coast Guard, who towed his vessel, the Kehaar Darwin, to Sugar Beach on Maui.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">There was no engine or communications equipment on the makeshift vessel and the sails were in poor condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cBeing disoriented while at sea in a vessel with no communication capabilities aboard can be deadly if not handled quickly,\u201d said Maui Coast Guard\u2019s Petty Officer 2nd Class Jacob Schlereth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cWe commend the good Samaritan for recognising the complications and contacting the proper authorities to initiate a rescue,\u201d he said of the Trilogy V operator who alerted authorities to the man\u2019s distress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The Hawaiian archipelago is the most isolated population centre in the world, being more than 3,800 kilometres from its nearest inhabited centre, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The US Coast Guard plan to interview the determined sailor before he resumes his voyage to Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:
