Ridley Scott Disses Lucasfilm’s ‘Star Wars’ Director Approach: \u2018It\u2019s F\u2014in\u2019 Stupid\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Since Lucasfilm started making \u201cStar Wars\u201d films again, the production company has been taking a page from other major franchises like Marvel and selecting indie directors to direct the series\u2019 latest installments. But \u201cAlien\u201d and \u201cBlade Runner\u201d creator Ridley Scott doesn\u2019t think that\u2019s such a good idea.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a candid (and profane) interview with Vulture to promote his latest film \u201cAll The Money In The World,\u201d Scott was asked if he would be willing to direct a \u201cStar Wars\u201d film. With a laugh, Scott said he\u2019s too \u201cdangerous\u201d to do a \u201cStar Wars\u201d film and suggested that Lucasfilm only wants directors who will do the bidding of execs there.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think they like to be in control, and I like to be in control myself, \u201d said Scott. \u201cWhen you get a guy who\u2019s done a low-budget movie and you suddenly give him $180 million, it makes no sense whatsoever. It\u2019s f\u2014in\u2019 stupid. You know what the reshoots cost?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Scott is likely alluding to directors like Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who were selected to direct the upcoming Han Solo origin film \u201cSolo\u201d after directing the $60 million animated film \u201cThe Lego Movie,\u201d but left the project after creative differences arose, leading to Ron Howard being called in to finish the project. \u201cRogue One,\u201d meanwhile, was directed by Gareth Edwards, who only had one blockbuster under his belt prior to making the film \u2014 2014\u2019s \u201cGodzilla\u201d \u2014 but required additional reshoots overseen by the film\u2019s screenwriter and \u201cThe Bourne Legacy\u201d director Tony Gilroy. Even Rian Johnson, director of \u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi,\u201d has never worked on a film of this scale, his most expensive film being the $30 million \u201cLooper.\u201d Prior to that 2012 sci-fi film featuring Bruce Willis, Johnson only had two microbudget indies to his name: \u201cThe Brother\u2019s Bloom\u201d and \u201cBrick.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Scott also said that his fee for doing a franchise film like \u201cStar Wars\u201d would be very high, but that he would do it under budget because of his experience working on high-budget films. He said he believes that experience is necessary before a director is ready to be given the keys to a major franchise.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt can make you dull as dishwater, but if you\u2019re really experienced and you know what you\u2019re doing, it\u2019s f\u2014ing essential,\u201d he said. \u201cGrow into it, little by little. Start low-budget, get a little bit bigger, maybe after $20 million, you can go to $80. But don\u2019t suddenly go to $160.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While taking a risk on indie directors has led to messy headlines for Lucasfilm, it has paid off well for Marvel, which has given its filmmakers more free rein to put their personal touch on the superheroes they bring to life. Taika Waititi, for example, went from directing the $2.5 million \u201cHunt for the Wilderpeople\u201d to the $180 million \u201cThor: Ragnarok,\u201d which has earned rave reception and nearly $850 million at the global box office. Similarly, James Gunn, director of the \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d films, worked mostly on low-budget genre fare like the $15 million gross-out horror film \u201cSlither\u201d prior to being picked up by Marvel Studios.<\/span><\/p>\n
