Apple Admits Every iPhone Has Serious Problems<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The moment was there. Having admitted iPhone batteries are substandard, here was Apple AAPL +0.29%\u2019s moment to stand up and make the same kind of changes Samsung pledged and delivered after the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. Instead Apple just promised to make the bandages cheaper, for now\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

In a message entitled \u2018A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance\u2019, Apple did admit \u201cWe apologize\u201d and it finally came clean 13 months later about the iOS 40% Bug I exclusive broke saying: \u201cIt should go without saying that we think sudden, unexpected shutdowns are unacceptable.\u201d Interestingly, I actually chased Apple for a comment on this for 6 months, it went unsaid.<\/span><\/p>\n

There were also pledges: reducing the $79 charge for battery replacement services to $29 for one year \u201cfor anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced\u201d. Apple also said it will improve visibility into iPhone battery health so owners can work out whether battery condition is affecting overall iPhone performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

To all of it I say: what a load of rubbish.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Apple apologised, it never admitted a mistake. It didn\u2019t follow Samsung\u2019s pledge to overhaul its battery technology or increase battery stamina to 95% of capacity after two years (as Samsung did). It also didn\u2019t copy LG or Google by increasing smartphone warranties to two years and covering the battery as part of this.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead iPhone owners got an 11 month window to replace defective iPhone batteries at a reduced cost, the reiteration when Apple quietly slowed your iPhone down without warning it was a feature owners should appreciate. And finally the suggestion that in future it is the responsibility of mainstream users to monitor their iPhone battery condition and act according rather than Apple.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally Apple closes by saying \u201cwe will never forget [your faith and support] or take it for granted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But don\u2019t buy it. Until Apple promises major batteries refinements, ongoing (not one-off) battery replacement policies, transparent and proactive warnings about your battery health and iPhone performance and volunteers to extend iPhone warranties beyond one year (including battery cover) then this isn\u2019t the apology we are looking for.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Apple did was admit to ongoing problems, offer a short term discount and tell users batteries in its future iPhones will last no longer. It\u2019s not enough, not even close…<\/span><\/p>\n
