It has destroyed more than 1,000 structures and threatened 18,000 others, including homes in the wealthy town of Montecito just outside the coastal city of Santa Barbara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The blaze, centered less than 100 miles (160 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, has forced more than 104,000 people to evacuate or seek shelter, turning neighborhoods into ghost towns and filled the air with smoke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Communities near Santa Barbara saw a break from the gusting winds that had stoked the fire and helped it spread, opening a window for authorities to contain the disaster with favorable conditions expected at the start of the week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Officials called Sunday one of their most productive days so far in battling the blaze during a late-day news conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The fire is now 45 percent contained. Firefighters were employing more than 970 fire engines and 34 helicopters to battle the blaze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Bakersfield Fire Department Captain Tim Ortiz described the fire as \u201clike nothing I\u2019ve ever been involved with before\u201d with \u201cwinds enough to almost push you over.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cWe\u2019re just hoping to make it home for Christmas,\u201d he said at a recreation center in Santa Barbara serving as a staging area and base camp for more than 3,000 firefighters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">In the city of Ventura, about 30 miles (48 km) to the south,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Larry Dennis, 60, sought refuge at a shelter on Sunday after the blaze inundated the region with smoke and turned nearby hillsides red.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen people who have lost everything,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Charlotte Garcia, 25, had been at the shelter for almost a week after the fire burned down her house in Ojai, about 30 miles (48 km) north of Ventura. She lamented that firefighters had not done more to stop the destruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cThe house next door to us got burnt down too, because they were too busy on the hill,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Cal Fire engineer Cory Iverson, 32, died on Thursday while battling the flames near the Ventura County community of Fillmore. The blaze\u2019s first fatality, he died of smoke inhalation and burns, the Ventura County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Five of the 20 most destructive fires in recorded history have ravaged the state in 2017, according to Cal Fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The Thomas fire, which authorities said had cost $123.8 million to date, forced many schools to close for days, shut roads and drove hundreds of thousands from their homes.
