Latest reports suggest that Apple is working on replacing the current two-cell design with an improved single-cell design\u2026 as long as the engineers can work it into an L-shape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The report comes from noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities (reports Mikey Campbell and others). By integrating the current two cell structure into a single L-shaped cell there will be more internal volume to store the energy, assuming the battery technology can be mangled into the required physical space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">This would not be the first time that Apple has created an irregular shape to maximise battery life in a product &#8211; the stepped battery construction in the 2015 MacBook machines filled an awkward space in such a way that more power could be stored inside the laptop chassis. From the surface this new L-battery will use a similar technique to provide more internal volume for battery cells by reducing the packing around the battery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Kuo\u2019s report suggests that the new battery shape would offer another 300 mAh or so of life for Apple\u2019s smartphones &#8211; a capacity increase of around ten percent. Given the year on year improvements that software can make to endurance figures this would represent a significant increase in the useful life of Cupertino\u2019s smartphone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Although the obvious answer to increasing battery capacity is to make a smartphone thicker, manufacturers across various brands have highlighted that in general consumers still prefer thinner phones to better battery life. Making best use of the available space alongside efficient software is the key to longevity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Improving battery life is a constant goal of every smartphone manufacturer. Thanks to its tight integration of software and hardware Apple has an inbuilt advantage when compared to Android and its requirement to work with a wide range of chips and parts.
