Hiroshima survivor begs North Korea & US to avoid nuclear war and find diplomatic solution<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

A SURVIVOR of the bombing of Hiroshima has urged the US and North Korea to negotiate together and avoid nuclear Armageddon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Setsuko Thurlow, an 85-year-old survivor of the Hiroshima bombing made the remarks after winning the Nobel Peace Prize together with the executive director of The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), Beatrice Fihn.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs Thurlow was 13 years old at the time of the Hiroshima bombing.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said: “No human being should suffer what we suffered.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I deeply and strongly urge the leaders of North Korea and the U.S. never to use nuclear weapons … Negotiate.<\/span><\/p>\n

“A diplomatic solution is the only solution.”<\/span><\/p>\n

However, her warning has come as Kim Jong-un has hinted at boosting North Korea’s nuclear arsenal in his latest threat to trigger World War 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

The reclusive dictator yesterday vowed to “complete the state’s nuclear force”, describing it as a “great historic cause”.<\/span><\/p>\n

He made the comments to top North Korean military officials after reportedly climbing the hermit state’s tallest mountain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pyongyang’s state media released an image of the despot at the top of Mount Paektu, which is considered a sacred site in Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n

North Korea is pursuing nuclear and missile weapons programmes in defiance of international condemnation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The United States and South Korea conducted large-scale military drills this week to counter the threat posed by Pyongyang.<\/span><\/p>\n

The North reacted with fury, saying the drills had made the outbreak of war “an established fact”.<\/span><\/p>\n

On November 29, Kim’s regime test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile which it claimed was capable of reaching the US mainland.<\/span><\/p>\n

It sparked a warning from Washington that North Korea’s leadership would be “utterly destroyed” if war were to break out.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Pentagon has mounted repeated shows of force after Pyongyang’s tests.<\/span><\/p>\n

The United States stations 28,500 troops in the South, a legacy of the Korean War in the 1950s.<\/span><\/p>\n
