14pt;color: #000000">New research predicts more than half of American households will use internet-connected, smart speakers to do their tasks just five years from now – and technology-friendly Australians were also likely to embrace smart speakers quickly.

The devices work like a personal assistant in the home, with the machines tasked with doing everything from ordering groceries to keeping up to date on the latest news, weather, and appointments.

Australian experts predict the trend to be replicated here and added there were unforeseen “lifestyle benefits” of using the artificial intelligence built into these speakers.

The boom will see many more Australians adopt the technology, fuelling a rise in smart home products from just $377 million last year to $4.7 billion by 2021.

The new study from Juniper Research predicted 55 per cent of all American households, or more than 70 million homes, will use at least one smart speaker by 2022, including devices like Google Home, Amazon Echo, and the upcoming Apple HomePod.

The research also found more than 35 million Americans already used a voice-activated device at least once per month to do everything from set reminders to check their calendar, order an Uber ride, or have the news headlines read to them.

A Google Australia spokeswoman said the company recently added 100 million new search answers, or “snippets,” to its smart speaker, which launched in Australia this July.

Telsyte managing director Foad Fadaghi said technology-friendly Australians were also likely to embrace smart speakers quickly, particularly as the devices continued to add more features and had already improved its “ability to understand the Australian accent”.

Mr Fadaghi said the addition of predictive features to these devices, fuelled by artificial intelligence, would also encourage more Aussies to install them and treat them as useful digital assistants.

“There will be a substantial amount of lifestyle benefits that consumers might get from smart assistants, like proactive reminders about traffic, and even the ability to read an email when you’ve made a commitment to someone even if you haven’t put it in your calendar,” Mr Fadaghi said.

“It’s that kind of integration that will create a lot of value for consumers.”

Telsyte predicts Australia’s Internet of Things industry will be worth $4.7
