{"id":52059,"date":"2017-11-13T06:13:44","date_gmt":"2017-11-13T06:13:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=52059"},"modified":"2017-11-13T06:13:44","modified_gmt":"2017-11-13T06:13:44","slug":"us-warns-against-proxy-conflicts-in-middle-east-as-world-war-3-tensions-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/world-news\/us-warns-against-proxy-conflicts-in-middle-east-as-world-war-3-tensions-rise.html","title":{"rendered":"US warns against proxy conflicts in Middle East as World War 3 tensions rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">US warns against proxy conflicts in Middle East as World War 3 tensions rise<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">THE US warned the Middle East not to use the crisis in Lebanon as a \u201cvenue to proxy conflicts\u201d last night, as the controversial resignation of its Prime Minister threatened to spike another regional crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Though he did not directly say so, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson\u2019s warning was aimed directly at Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shi&#8217;ite Iran, whose rivalry has already wrought upheaval in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Bahrain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Prime Minister Saad Hariri\u2019s shock resignation while in Saudi Arabia has led to a week of mounting tensions which threatens to break the country\u2019s delicate coalition government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The Lebanese unity government that he formed a year ago includes Hezbollah members &#8211; the result of a tacit Saudi-Iranian agreement to protect Lebanon from other proxy wars in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">In televised remarks from Riyadh the PM said that he was stepping down because of an unspecified threat to his life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">He accused Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah of taking over Lebanon and destabilising the wider region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Hezbollah, in turn, claimed that Saudi Arabia detained Mr Hariri and forced his resignation, with leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah saying the move was aimed at destabilising the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The act, he said, was a declaration of war by Saudi Arabia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The accusations were echoed yesterday by Lebanon\u2019s president Michel Aoun, who reportedly claimed Hariri had been \u201ckidnapped\u201d and must be offered diplomatic immunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Aoun had rejected the idea that Harari had resigned of his own volition, saying last week: &#8220;The obscurity surrounding the condition of Prime Minister Saad Hariri since his resignation a week ago means that all positions and actions declared by him or attributed to him do not reflect the truth\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Saudi Minister for Gulf Affairs Thamer al-Sabhan warned earlier this month that his government would deal with Lebanon as a hostile state as long as Hezbollah was in the Lebanese government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">On the day of Mr Harari\u2019s resignation, Saudi forces shot down a ballistic missile fired from Yemen and aimed for Riyadh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Saudi Arabia accused Iran of \u201cdirect military action\u201d, claiming the missile was supplied by Iran and fired by Hezbollah, and warned its citizens to leave Lebanon immediately.
