{"id":51754,"date":"2017-11-10T07:54:27","date_gmt":"2017-11-10T07:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=51754"},"modified":"2017-11-10T07:54:27","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T07:54:27","slug":"world-war-3-will-be-fought-with-british-weapons-as-uk-arms-sales-to-saudi-arabia-soar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/world-news\/world-war-3-will-be-fought-with-british-weapons-as-uk-arms-sales-to-saudi-arabia-soar.html","title":{"rendered":"WORLD WAR 3 will be fought &#8216;with British weapons&#8217; as UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia soar"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">WORLD WAR 3 will be fought &#8216;with British weapons&#8217; as UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia soar<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">BRITISH arms sales to Saudi Arabia have soared since its military campaign against Yemen got underway, according to reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">More than \u00a34.6bn of British-made bombs and missiles were sold to the Saudis in the first two years of airstrikes which amounts to a an increase of almost 500 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Figures from the Department for International Trade (DIT) show in the two years leading up to the Yemen war, \u00a333m of ML4 licences covering bombs, missiles and countermeasures were approved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">But in the two years since the start of Saudi bombing in March 2015, the figure increased by 457 per cent to \u00a31.9bn, according to calculations by Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Licences covering aircraft including Eurofighter jets have also risen by 70 per cent to \u00a32.6bn in the same period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">CAAT co-director Tom Barns said the Government has been accelerating sales of \u201cequipment being used to commit atrocities in Yemen\u201d as the pace of Saudi-led air strikes increases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">He told the Independent: \u201cOver the course of this year the situation in Yemen is only getting worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cAt a time when the UK should at least be putting more consideration into what\u2019s being sold they are giving more and more of these licences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">A DIT spokesman said: \u201cThe UK Government takes its export control responsibilities very seriously and operates one of the most robust arms export control regimes in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">&#8220;We rigorously examine every application on a case-by-case basis against the Consolidated EU and National Arms Export Licensing Criteria. We will not grant a licence if to do so would be inconsistent with these Criteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">&#8220;The Government publishes regular statistics on the value of export licences, but these are not necessarily a measure of actual exports shipped as exporters must re-apply where a licence is unused. This results in double counting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The United Nations said air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition were the main cause of almost 5,295 civilian deaths and 8,873 casualties confirmed so far, warning that the real figure is \u201clikely to be far higher\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">British-made bombs have been found at the scene of bombings deemed to violate international law but the UK has continued its political and material support for Riyadh\u2019s campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The High Court has ruled that arms exports to Saudi Arabia are legal because the available evidence did not prove \u201ca clear risk that the items might be used in the commission of a serious violation of international humanitarian law\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The British Government has emphasised that it is not a member of the Saudi-led coalition or party to the conflict, but reinstated its support for its intervention to \u201cdeter aggression by the Houthis and allow for the return of the legitimate Yemeni Government\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">But Amnesty International UK said a total halt to British arms exports to Saudi Arabia was \u201clong overdue\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Polly Truscott, its foreign affairs analyst, told the Independent: \u201cWhen the High Court made its very disappointing ruling in the summer, we said there was a clear human rights need for the UK and other governments to stop selling arms to the Saudi coalition unless they were willing to risk becoming a party to terrible crimes in Yemen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cThese figures are a further reminder of how the UK Government is apparently more interested in the financial bottom line for the arms industry, than in the need to protect civilians.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">SourceL0\u00a0http:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/877590\/world-war-3-british-arms-sales-saudi-arabia-yemen-bombing-campaign<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-background-color\">\n\t\t\t  <div \n\t\t\t  \tclass = \"fb-comments\" \n\t\t\t  \tdata-href = \"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/world-news\/world-war-3-will-be-fought-with-british-weapons-as-uk-arms-sales-to-saudi-arabia-soar.html\"\n\t\t\t  \tdata-numposts = \"10\"\n\t\t\t  \tdata-lazy = \"true\"\n\t\t\t\tdata-colorscheme = \"light\"\n\t\t\t\tdata-order-by = \"social\"\n\t\t\t\tdata-mobile=true>\n\t\t\t  <\/div><\/div>\n\t\t  <style>\n\t\t    .fb-background-color {\n\t\t\t\tbackground: #ffffff !important;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t.fb_iframe_widget_fluid_desktop iframe {\n\t\t\t    width: 630px !important;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t  <\/style>\n\t\t  ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WORLD WAR 3 will be fought &#8216;with British weapons&#8217; as UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia soar BRITISH arms sales to Saudi Arabia have soared since its military campaign against Yemen got underway, according to reports.
