Who is Josh Doctson? The Redskins are slowly finding out, on and off the field.:-Toward the end of a two-minute and 19-second interview, Redskins running back Robert Kelley offers a word of advice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re trying to write a story on Josh Doctson, it\u2019s going to be hard trying to crack it,\u201d Kelley said. \u201cBecause he ain\u2019t really going to say much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Chris Thompson, sitting next to Kelley\u2019s locker, chimed in.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGood luck with that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Redskins wide receiver had already declined three requests for an interview Wednesday, as he often has this season. It\u2019s nothing personal with the media, Doctson said while walking toward the shower upon the second request. The 24-year-old said he\u2019s just a reserved guy.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Sunday\u2019s victory over the Seattle Seahawks, however, Doctson exuded a level of confidence rarely seen from the 2016 first-round pick, thumping his chest at the crowd after a 38-yard reception to set up the game-winning touchdown.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, who exactly is Doctson? It\u2019s a mystery that\u2019s slowly being revealed, on and off the field.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the field, he\u2019s a playmaker. That wasn\u2019t apparent during his rookie season when Doctson played just two games because of a lingering Achilles\u2019 injury. But the TCU product has made his talent clear in Year 2. Doctson leads the team with 17.2 yards per reception, and he\u2019s tied for a team-high three receiving touchdowns.<\/span><\/p>\n

The issue in 2017 hasn\u2019t been his ability, but his workload. Redskins Coach Jay Gruden wanted Doctson to show more in practice at the start of the season to receive more snaps during games. He did just that, receiving a starting role at the \u201cX\u201d receiver position over the past three games with Terrelle Pryor Sr., the team\u2019s biggest free agent acquisition on offense, serving as his backup.<\/span><\/p>\n

Doctson has had just seven receptions in those games, though, raising his season total to 11 catches.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like we should take more shots and give him more chances, I guess you can say, on those 50-50 balls,\u201d wide receiver Jamison Crowder said. \u201cJust watching him and seeing what he\u2019s capable of, I feel like either he\u2019ll catch it or nobody will catch it. .\u2009.\u2009. You can see it though, man, with the few opportunities he\u2019s got. You can see that he has ability to go make those plays.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The impressive catch against Seattle could create more targets for Doctson, who laid out for a deep ball by quarterback Kirk Cousins in the biggest catch of his short career. Cornerback Josh Norman considered it a redemptive moment after Doctson couldn\u2019t secure what would have been the game-winning touchdown in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs. The play led some fans to question the hype after waiting an entire season to see Doctson\u2019s ability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Five weeks later, Doctson made clear why he was a first-round pick.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI told him after [we] scored, \u2018Let\u2019s make sure this isn\u2019t a one-and-done thing. Let\u2019s make sure this is a repeatable thing and something that people expect to have happen not just next week, not just this season, but hopefully for seasons to come,\u2019\u201d Cousins said. \u201cThat\u2019s where the vision needs to be and then we have got to work in a way where that can become a reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Off the field, Doctson is quiet \u2014 a rare trait to find in a millennial, first-round wide receiver. His teammates are still getting to know him, and Doctson appears to be more engaging this year now that he\u2019s playing, producing and injury-free.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI know a lot of people early on tried to question, \u2018Do he really wan to play? Is he this, this or that?\u2019\u201d Kelley said. It was a knock brought up publicly by former Redskins tight end Chris Cooley on the radio during Doctson\u2019s first training camp. \u201cLike last game, when he caught that ball, you see how hype \u2026 he gets like that. I feel like off the field, he\u2019s quiet. But on the field, I think he turns into a monster, man. That\u2019s what you\u2019ve seen the last couple of weeks when he goes up for the ball. I feel like he\u2019s a monster.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Cousins described him as intelligent, a good teammate, a student of the game and a joy to work with. Kelley described him as a laid-back dude who opens up when he finds people to whom he can relate. Crowder, who sits next to Doctson in the locker room, said he isn\u2019t as quiet as he initially thought.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou can kind of tell that he got another little side to him,\u201d Crowder said. \u201cYou don\u2019t get to see it that much, but on the field, he\u2019s got a little different side to him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As Crowder shared his perspective, Doctson walked back to his locker and overheard the conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLittle rat,\u201d Doctson uttered.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWooooooah,\u201d Crowder said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTMZ,\u201d Doctson responded.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut, yeah, [Doctson] got a little side to him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAwww, that\u2019s what y\u2019all talkin bout?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Doctson walked away, declining a third interview request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Doctson declined another request after Thursday\u2019s practice. As he walked away, two questions were asked: Who is Josh Doctson? What are you about?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI ain\u2019t nobody, man,\u201d Doctson responded.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mystery remains, but one thing is evident to his teammates.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the ball in the air, he\u2019s trying to get it,\u201d Kelley said. \u201cThat\u2019s all that matters at this point.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
