{"id":51588,"date":"2017-11-10T05:02:16","date_gmt":"2017-11-10T05:02:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=51588"},"modified":"2017-11-10T05:02:16","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T05:02:16","slug":"pence-voices-u-s-concern-to-turkish-prime-minister-about-arrests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/news\/pence-voices-u-s-concern-to-turkish-prime-minister-about-arrests.html","title":{"rendered":"Pence voices U.S. concern to Turkish prime minister about arrests"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Pence voices U.S. concern to Turkish prime minister about arrests<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">U.S. Vice President Mike Pence expressed \u201cdeep concern\u201d to Turkey\u2019s prime minister on Thursday about the arrests of American citizens and local staff of U.S. missions in Turkey, the White House said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The matters raised by Pence are some of the issues that have created tension between the two NATO allies in recent months, along with a dispute over a Turkish cleric living in the United States whom Ankara accuses of orchestrating a failed military coup in Turkey last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">In a White House meeting with Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, Pence voiced \u201cdeep concern over the arrests of American citizens, Mission Turkey local staff, journalists, and members of civil society under the state of emergency and urged transparency and due process in the resolution of their cases,\u201d the White House said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">In May, a translator at the U.S. consulate in the province of Adana in southern Turkey was arrested. More recently, a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration worker was detained in Istanbul. Both are accused of links to last year\u2019s coup attempt. The U.S. embassy has said the accusations are baseless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Before leaving for the United States, Yildirim had said Turkey\u2019s demand for the United States to hand over cleric Fethullah Gulen, who has lived in Pennsylvania since 1999, would be discussed during his visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">U.S. officials have said courts require sufficient evidence to order Gulen\u2019s extradition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Another issue to be raised, Yildirim had said, was the fate of some Turkish citizens arrested in the United States &#8211; a reference to a wealthy gold trader who was arrested over Iran sanctions evasion last year and an executive at a state-owned bank arrested this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The White House statement made no mention of any discussions about either subject.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">It said the two officials \u201cexpressed hope that their meeting would help to usher in a new chapter in U.S.-Turkey relations and agreed on the need for constructive dialogue, as friends and allies, on bilateral challenges.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Pence reaffirmed the \u201cenduring strategic partnership\u201d between the two countries and stressed the U.S. commitment to stand with Turkey against the militant Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) \u201cand other terrorist threats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The United States partially resumed issuing visas in Turkey on Monday after getting what it said were assurances about the safety of staff at its missions following a number of detentions.
