World War 3? UN ‘deeply concerned’ about ‘conflict and crisis on Europe’s doorstep’<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Neal Walker, the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, stated that the increased conflict dubbed the War in Donbass, presents a renewed threat and could impact the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said: “The United Nations is deeply concerned by the recent escalation of hostilities near water, electricity and gas supply infrastructure in Donetsk province, eastern Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Such an escalation, so close to critical infrastructure, risks prompting a severe deterioration of the ongoing humanitarian crisis on Europe\u2019s doorstep.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The Donetsk and Verkhniokalmiuska filter stations have both been targeted in the escalating conflict with the former being shelled three times in the past six days while the latter was previously attacked 12 times in one night.<\/span><\/p>\n

The two stations play an important role in delivering clean water to the 1.1million people that live on either side of the contact line that currently divides east Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Voda Donbasa water company has been forced to conduct repairs despite the shelling risk in order to maintain a clean water supply in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Walker added that the increased attacks have the potential to cause a greater loss of life due to the chlorine gas stored in the filter stations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The War in Donbass started in March 2014 following the annexation of the Crimea by Russia after protests by pro-Moscow and anti-government groups escalated into armed conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n

The two forces involved are the self-declared Donetsk and Luhansk People\u2019s Republic that are abbreviated as DPR and LPR respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

Russia has previously been accused of supplying equipment to both sides in the conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kremlin has supposedly provided the DPR and LPR with arms, armoured vehicles, tanks and other military tools.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reports of Russian military forces playing a part in the conflict have also been raised – Russia stated that several paratroopers had crossed the border into Ukraine \u201cby accident\u201d when pressed on the issue in two years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

The escalating conflict in Ukraine comes as Russia is increasingly rumoured to be planning an invasion of the Baltic states that could lead to World War 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

September saw Vladimir Putin leaving thousands of Russian troops in Belarus despite promising that he would not do so following the leader staging war games.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fears that Russia is plotting to invade westwards spiked after Ukraine’s Commander in Chief Viktor Muzhenko claimed the Russian President lied about how many soldiers were there in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Zapad war games, held by troops from Russia and Belarus on territory in both countries in September, have been a source of concern for neighbouring Ukraine and NATO member states on Europe’s eastern flank.<\/span><\/p>\n

Russia has claimed the purpose of the exercise was to rehearse a purely defensive scenario.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kremlin also claimed that the scale of the war games was in line with international rules and that allegations it was a springboard to invade Poland, Lithuania or Ukraine were false.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Mr Muzhenko has claimed war games were of an offensive nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tensions between Kiev and Moscow are high after Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014 and the outbreak of a separatist insurgency in eastern Ukraine that has killed more than 10,000 people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Russia ranks third in the world in terms of military spending, ploughing a massive roughly \u00a351.5billion into defence annually.<\/span><\/p>\n

By comparison, the UK spends \u00a335billion on defence.<\/span><\/p>\n
