World War 3? Egypt backs Saudi Arabia in stand-off with Iran after ‘act of aggression’<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

He pledged his support for Saudi Arabia who are locked in a stand-off with Iran and Lebanon after accusing both countries of \u201cacts of war\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

President al-Sisi said: “I have said it once and I will say it again, Gulf national security is Egyptian national security. I have faith in the wise and firm leadership of Saudi Arabia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia accused Iran of supplying a ballistic missile launched at their capital to Houthi rebels in Yemen.<\/span><\/p>\n

They said the attack was a \u201cclear act of aggression\u201d by Iran and \u201ccould rise to be considered an act of war\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Saudi Arabia accused Lebanon of declaring war following \u201caggression\u201d against the kingdom by Shia group Hezbollah.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saudi Gulf affairs minister Thamer al-Sabhan said the Lebanese administration would now be \u201cdealt with as a Government declaring war on Saudi Arabia\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

He claimed Hezbollah\u2019s actions “were considered acts of a declaration of war against Saudi Arabia by Lebanon and by the Lebanese Party of the Devil\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Calling for a \u201cde-escalation” of tensions President al-Sisi spoke out against military strikes Iran or their allies Lebanese group Hezbollah.<\/span><\/p>\n

Claiming there was enough turmoil in the region Mr al-Sisi said he was \u201calways against war\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Egyptian leader praised the “reassuring and stable” situation in Saudi Arabia following the corruption crackdown which has seen dozens of officials and business leaders jailed.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a \u201cpurge\u201d 11 princes were among those locked up in the luxury Ritz-Carlton hotel which has been seen by some as a power grab by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.<\/span><\/p>\n

The royal decree said ahead of the crackdown: \u201cThe homeland will not exist unless corruption is uprooted and the corrupt are held accountable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Donald Trump has backed the Saudi monarch King Salman on Twitter following his purge of the country\u2019s elite following claims of corruption.<\/span><\/p>\n

The President tweeted: \u201cI have great confidence in King Salman and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, they know exactly what they are doing some of those they are harshly treating have been \u2018milking\u2019 their country for years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lebanon is the latest country to be caught up the Persian power struggle between Iran and Saudi Arabia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The European Union has echoed US support for Lebanon following the resignation of prime minister Saad al-Hariri while Saudi Arabia\u2019s claim that Beirut has declared war threatens strained ties in the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n

EU ambassadors to Lebanon said they reaffirmed “their strong support for the continued unity, stability, sovereignty, and security of Lebanon and its people”.<\/span><\/p>\n

They also called “on all sides to pursue constructive dialogue and to build on the work achieved in the last 11 months towards strengthening Lebanon’s institutions and preparing parliamentary elections in early 2018, in adherence with the Constitution”<\/span><\/p>\n
