{"id":51241,"date":"2017-11-08T06:41:21","date_gmt":"2017-11-08T06:41:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=51241"},"modified":"2017-11-08T06:41:21","modified_gmt":"2017-11-08T06:41:21","slug":"sky-says-it-could-shut-sky-news-if-fox-takeover-blocked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/business\/sky-says-it-could-shut-sky-news-if-fox-takeover-blocked.html","title":{"rendered":"Sky says it could shut Sky News if Fox takeover blocked"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;color: #000000\">Sky says it could shut Sky News if Fox takeover blocked<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;color: #000000\">Sky says it could shut Sky News if Fox takeover blocked: Fox\u2019s 10.75 pound-a-share bid to acquire the 61 percent of Sky that it does not already own is being investigated by Britain\u2019s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which is examining whether the takeover would have an adverse impact on the country\u2019s plurality of media ownership and broadcasting standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;color: #000000\">Murdoch-controlled News Corp (NWSA.O) also owns The Times and The Sun newspapers in Britain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;color: #000000\">In a submission made to the CMA last month but published by the regulator on Tuesday, Sky said it \u201cwould likely be prompted to review\u201d its position \u201cin the event that the continued provision of Sky News in its current form unduly impeded merger and\/or other corporate opportunities available in relation to Sky\u2019s broader business\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;color: #000000\">The broadcaster said: \u201cThe CMA should not in its assessment simply assume the \u2018continued provision of Sky News\u2019 and its current contribution to plurality, \u2018absent the transaction\u2019\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;color: #000000\">Fox\u2019s bid for full control of Sky has been beset by a series of obstacles, including the CMA investigation and opposition from some politicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;color: #000000\">Sky shares slipped 1 percent to 930 pence on Tuesday after CNBC reported that Fox had recently held talks about selling to Walt Disney (DIS.N) some film and television assets, including its 39 percent stake in Sky, news that increased doubts over whether the Fox-Sky deal would get done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;color: #000000\">By threatening to shut down Sky News, the company has raised the prospect of closing an influential 24-hour, international channel that has been on air for 28 years.
