NY voters shoot down constitutional convention proposal<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

New York State voters were soundly rejecting a ballot proposal Tuesday night to hold a constitutional convention following a multi-million dollar campaign by public employee unions against it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The question is asked of voters every 20 years to determine whether to convene delegates to amend the state constitution and take up issues that have been rejected by the state Legislature \u2014 such as term limits and stricter ethics laws that could bar lawmakers from earning outside income.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Big Labor claimed that the convention, which would be run by delegates elected across the state, could jeopardize pension protections enshrined in the state Constitution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Supporters complained opponents ran an effective scare campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gov. Cuomo came out against the Con-Con just before the vote.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always in the details and unless we know who controls the convention and who the delegates are to the convention, then I think it\u2019s a very risky proposition,\u201d Cuomo said after voting in Mt. Kisco Tuesday night.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEspecially in this environment where big money can buy everything and there are no controls over who could be a delegate and how delegates are financed . . . The idea of a constitutional convention, yes, but not unless you can limit special interest money and not unless you can make sure the delegates are actual citizens and not just the continuation of the elected officials.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

With more than 25 percent of 15,526 election districts reporting, Proposition 1 was going down by a 70-30 percent margin.<\/span><\/p>\n

About 10 percent of the ballots were blank, apparently because voters didn\u2019t turn over the election ballot to where the three proposition questions were listed.<\/span><\/p>\n

But voters appeared to approve Proposition 2, which asked whether judges should have the right to revoke the pension of public officials convicted of felonies related to their jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 59 percent of voters said yes, compared to 29 percent opposed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Proposition 3 \u2014 which asked whether local governments upstate should have the right to use 250 acres of forest land for local projects \u2014 was losing by a small margin with about two-thirds of the votes still to be counted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the proposal, the state would add 250 other acres to the preserve as compensation.<\/span><\/p>\n
