Eight arrested in protests as Milo Yiannopoulos speaks at Cal State Fullerton<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Eight arrested in protests as Milo Yiannopoulos speaks at Cal State Fullerton:- At least eight people were arrested at Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday night during small but tense protests as conservative firebrand Milo Yiannopoulos spoke, blasting what he called the silencing of conservative views on college campuses.<\/span><\/p>\n

At least two people were arrested after a scuffle between left-wing protesters and right-wing counter-protesters, said university spokesman Jeff Cook. Another protester, a woman wearing a black helmet and mask, was arrested after shooting pepper spray into the air. Before her arrest, the woman was heard urging protesters to break into the Yiannopoulos event and beat him up. It\u2019s unclear what led to the other arrests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cal State Fullerton\u2019s chapter of the College Republicans hosted the sold-out event at the Titan Student Union. It drew an audience of more than 800 people.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Yiannopoulos took the stage, the audience cheered and chanted his name. He began by commenting on sexual harassment scandals plaguing Hollywood, and later called on the federal government to withhold funding from universities that he said try to shut down conservative speech.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to oppressed minorities and marginalized groups, there\u2019s no tribe in America at greater risk \u2014 the physical and existential risk \u2014 than the campus conservative,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside the event, police intervened in the pepper spray incident, forming a line to get the crowd \u2014 about 50 people at the time \u2014 to move along.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shouting matches broke out later in the evening as the crowd moved toward the hall where Yiannopoulos spoke. Just before 7 p.m., a protester threw a water bottle at someone wearing a \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d hat. University police were out in force, with extra officers on hand from several agencies. Helicopters hovered over campus while police officers on horseback monitored the crowd. Around 8 p.m., police cleared out a rowdy crowd of about 150 people, which had moved near a campus library.<\/span><\/p>\n

One woman sought treatment from firefighters, but no other injuries were reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 32-year-old Yiannpoulos previously worked as the tech editor of the far-right Breitbart News and has sought out controversy at every turn. An early supporter of President Trump, he lambastes political correctness and last year was banned from Twitter for harassing \u201cGhostbusters\u201d and \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d star Leslie Jones. In February, he resigned from Breitbart after video was released showing him making comments that were interpreted as being supportive of pedophilia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bianca Turano, who called herself a conservative, went to the protest with her father to call out right-wing agitators making racist or hateful comments. The pair said they support Trump, but not Yiannopoulos or hate speech.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re here to confront them about what they\u2019re doing,\u201d Turano, 23, said of right-wing protesters. \u201cThey\u2019re really bullies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Her father, John Turano, agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re here to harass the patriots on my team,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students hosting a nearby \u201cUnity Block Party\u201d on the campus quad were peaceful. That event, which ended about 7:20 p.m., featured speakers from the LGBTQ community and immigrants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some students were surprised when they heard Yiannopoulos was coming to campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was personally shocked and kind of offended because this campus has so many minorities,\u201d said Alia Abuelhassan, 21.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the event, the university said that while Yiannopoulos is a controversial figure, the administration does not play a role in determining which speakers any student groups can invite to campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe value of free speech notwithstanding, the law is clear. Hate-speech codes that have been enacted by some colleges and universities have been declared unconstitutional when challenged in court, \u201d Cook said when the event was being finalized in August.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tuesday\u2019s event marked Yiannopoulos\u2019 first college-speaking appearance in the U.S. since his highly touted \u201cBerkeley Free Speech Week\u201d was scheduled in late September. That event fell apart because of disorganization. Yiannopoulos blamed UC Berkeley officials for trying to stop him from coming to campus. Other protests earlier this year in the city turned ugly, with far-left and far-right forces fighting in the streets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yiannopoulos is arranging a number of cross-country speaking engagements that he calls his \u201cTroll Academy Tour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In a text in August to a Los Angeles Times reporter, Yiannopoulos said, \u201cNaturally, I\u2019ll be visiting a lot of colleges in California. It\u2019s the craziest state of all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
