North Korea may use ALGAE to fight against brutal sanctions as World War 3 looms<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The rogue state is reportedly beefing up research to strengthen its energy and food security.<\/span><\/p>\n

Algae organisms can produce food, fertiliser, feedstock and fuel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Analysis website 38 North reported the algae industry could gradually “mitigate the negative effects of sanctions both on the country’s energy supply and food security\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The hermit nation has had research facilities, such as open ponds and aquaculture systems, since early 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n

These facilities, key infrastructure for algae growth, have recently become more complex.<\/span><\/p>\n

North Korea is very dependent on foreign imports of fuel and food. China has historically been Pyongyang\u2019s main trading partner but Beijing limited refined oil product exports at the beginning of the month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Algae, when processed, contains a high protein content and it can be used as a food supplement and fertiliser.<\/span><\/p>\n

38 North reports: “It is not surprising that the North Korean government is developing thousands of rural open ponds producing algae and bigger and more sophisticated sites, whose purpose increasingly looks like algae production.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The same algae can also contain approximately 20 per cent lipids, which can be processed into biofuels.<\/span><\/p>\n

“If there were just 100 times more acreage in production and being utilised, the oil yield could be 6.5 per cent of North Korea’s 2014 estimated requirements for their entire economy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

They estimated that 2,851 tons of algae biomass could be produced each year in the nine facilities across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

They contains approximately 1,425.5 tons of nutritional mass and could be converted to the equivalent of 4,075.6 barrels of oil.<\/span><\/p>\n

The website continued: “Given the potential for algae-based oil production, a more thorough investigation is warranted of whether these facilities could in the future fulfil a national security requirement.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Sanctions of the rebel country include a ban on importing all natural gas liquids and condensates, capping crude oil imports and petroleum products, exporting textiles and prohibiting countries from authorising new work permits for North Korean citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n

US Ambassador Robert Wood told the General Assembly’s disarmament committee on Monday that the United States is working closely with its allies and partners “to exert maximum economic and diplomatic pressure on the Pyongyang regime to compel its leaders to change course and engage in talks aimed at denuclearisation\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

He added: \u201dNorth Korea will not achieve the security or the prosperity it seeks, until it complies with its international obligations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Yesterday, during his Chatham House speech, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said that economic pressure from China was \u201ckey\u201d in staving off the growing threat from Kim Jong-un.<\/span><\/p>\n
