Bob Corker’s Powerful Words About Donald Trump<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Bob Corker’s Powerful Words About Donald Trump:- There are two ways to view the escalating feud between President Donald Trump and Senator Bob Corker, of Tennessee. The cynical view is to consider the whole affair as just more manna from Trump Heaven for political reporters and cable-news producers, who no longer have to worry about what to write or how to fill their shows. The @realDonaldTrump Twitter account will always provide.<\/span><\/p>\n

But there is also something serious and consequential going on here, something that goes beyond the daily Twitter wars. Corker, liberated by his decision not to seek re\u00eblection in 2018, is breaking the vow of pettifogging that most Republican leaders have adhered to in talking about this rogue President. He is a senior Republican speaking plain truths that no amount of vitriol from Trump and his supporters can obscure. And he is doing the country, and perhaps even the world, a service.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back in August, Corker, who is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, warned that Trump hadn\u2019t demonstrated the stability or the competence necessary for a President. Earlier this month, he said that Defense Secretary James Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly were the \u201cpeople that help separate our country from chaos.\u201d A week later, after Trump attacked him on Twitter, Corker described the White House as an \u201cadult day-care center,\u201d and added, \u201cSomeone obviously missed their shift this morning.\u201d The same day, he told the Times that Trump was treating the Presidency like a \u201creality show\u201d and was possibly setting the United States \u201con the path to World War Three.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On Tuesday morning, Corker made the rounds on the morning talk shows, where he was repeatedly asked about those comments. He stressed that he hadn\u2019t made them lightly. On ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America,\u201d Corker told George Stephanopoulos that Trump\u2019s tweets were undermining the efforts that Tillerson and others were making to find a peaceful solution to the North Korea crisis. \u201cI would just like for him to leave it to the professionals for a while, and see if we can do something that\u2019s constructive for our country, the region, and the world,\u201d Corker said of Trump. On NBC\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d show, Savannah Guthrie put Corker on the spot, asking, \u201cLeft to his own devices, do you think the President is a threat to national security?\u201d Corker replied, \u201cI think there are people around him who work in an effort to contain him.\u201d After Guthrie pointed out that Corker seemed to be accepting the premise of her question, he once again referred to Tillerson\u2019s diplomatic efforts, saying, \u201cWhen you kneecap that effort, you really move our country into binary choice, which could lead to a world war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Corker also suggested that the President should stay out of the process of writing the tax-reform bill that Republicans are hoping to get through Congress soon. Evidently, Trump was watching. At 8:13 a.m., Trump said, in a pair of tweets, \u201cBob Corker, who helped President O give us the bad Iran Deal & couldn\u2019t get elected dog catcher in Tennessee, is now fighting Tax Cuts . . . Corker dropped out of the race in Tennessee when I refused to endorse him, and now is only negative on anything Trump. Look at his record!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

There was nothing particularly unusual there. Trump lives by the theory that, if someone tweaks your nose, you should immediately punch him or her in the face.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this instance, though, he was dealing with a fellow real-estate developer\u2014Corker still owns, through a blind trust, one of Chattanooga\u2019s biggest property firms\u2014who, despite his bespoke suits and silk ties, also knows the rules of the street. And, although he hadn\u2019t said it straight out to Guthrie, Corker clearly views Trump as a grave threat to national security. At about nine-thirty, as he was walking the corridors on Capitol Hill, Corker gave another interview, to CNN\u2019s Manu Raju, who began by asking about Trump\u2019s tweets.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNothing that he said in his tweets today were truthful or accurate,\u201d Corker said. \u201cHe knows it, and people around him know it. I would hope the staff over there would figure out ways of controlling him. . . . We grew up in our family not using the \u2018L\u2019 word. But they are provable untruths. Provable.\u201d After pointing out the roles he has played on the Iran issue and tax reform, Corker went on. \u201cUnfortunately, I think world leaders are aware that much of what he says is untrue. Certainly, people here are, because these things are provably untrue. They are just factually incorrect, and people know the difference. So I don\u2019t know why he lowers himself to such a low, low standard, and debases our country in the way that he does, but he does. . . . It\u2019s unfortunate that our nation finds itself in this place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
