Nobody wants to talk about it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut when you think about it, Mitch and I were saying: That has consequences 40 years out, depending on the age of the judge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">In praising his record in naming judges to the federal bench, Mr. Trump was eager to assess quality and quantity. He claimed that \u201csome scholars that have been studying it\u201d have given \u201cgreat reviews\u201d to his nominees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Saying his judicial appointments will \u201cset records,\u201d Mr. Trump called this \u201cone of the big unsung things of this administration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u2018He ran a very strong race\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Mr. Trump has plans next week to meet with Roy Moore, who won the Republican primary race in Alabama to fill the Senate seat of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Mr. Trump had campaigned against Mr. Moore and headlined a rally for the incumbent who lost, Senator Luther Strange. But even before the vote in September, the president had begun to make tepid statements supporting Mr. Moore\u2019s candidacy, which was backed by Stephen K. Bannon, the former White House strategist. Mr. Trump was said to have been upset with members of his staff who had encouraged him to back Mr. Strange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be talking to him, and I can report to you then, O.K.?\u201d Mr. Trump said of the coming meeting with Mr. Moore. \u201cWe\u2019re going to talk to him about a lot of different things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cHe ran a very strong race,\u201d Mr. Trump added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u2018I\u2019d like to see it end\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Mr. Trump was asked at one point whether he had plans to fire Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel investigating ties between his presidential campaign and Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cNo,\u201d Mr. Trump said flatly. \u201cNot at all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Mr. Trump has dutifully followed the advice of his legal team, standing back from Mr. Mueller\u2019s continuing inquiry, after speculation that the president would fire the special counsel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cI\u2019d like to see it end,\u201d Mr. Trump said of the investigation. \u201cThey ought to get to the end of it, because I think the American public is sick of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The president then returned to one of his oft-repeated talking points: that attention to possible collusion between his campaign and Russia is an \u201cexcuse\u201d from Democrats searching for reasons Mrs. Clinton lost the election in November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u2018Totally fake news\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">In response to reports that his campaign had been subpoenaed for documents relating to accusations of sexual assault, Mr. Trump called the allegations \u201ctotally fake news.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cIt\u2019s fake,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s made-up stuff, and it\u2019s disgraceful what happens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cBut,\u201d Mr. Trump added, \u201cthat happens in the world of politics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u2018The Puerto Rico situation \u2014 it\u2019s been outstanding\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Mr. Trump said he spoke to Gov. Jerry Brown Jr. of California about the devastating fires that ravaged Northern California last week. He also cited \u201can A-plus\u201d approval rating that James Lee Witt, the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency under President Bill Clinton, gave to the Trump administration\u2019s response in the aftermath of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Mr. Trump spoke of \u201ctremendous amounts of water\u201d and \u201cmassive amounts of food\u201d being distributed across Puerto Rico by FEMA workers and the military.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cYou look at the governor of Puerto Rico \u2014 he himself has said we\u2019ve done an outstanding job,\u201d Mr. Trump said. \u201cMost people have said we\u2019ve done an outstanding job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The president has been harshly criticized for what many see as a lackluster and delayed response to the island\u2019s devastation \u2014 especially after he lashed out at the mayor of San Juan, who questioned Mr. Trump\u2019s leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Mr. Trump has said that Puerto Rico\u2019s poor infrastructure and debt was partly to blame for the crisis. He later reassured the island territory, where more than 80 percent of the population remains without power, that he would \u201calways be with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u2018Hillary, please run\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">In the final moments of the news conference, Mr. Trump said he hoped Mrs. Clinton, his opponent in the 2016 presidential campaign, would run again in 2020. It was a repeat of a tweet he posted in the morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cOh, I hope Hillary runs,\u201d he said. \u201cHillary, please run again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Asked about Mrs. Clinton\u2019s defense of N.F.L. players kneeling during the national anthem, the president blamed her argument \u2014 that the players were protesting the criminal justice system, not the American flag or national anthem \u2014 as a reason she lost the election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cThere\u2019s plenty of time to do knees and there\u2019s plenty of time to do lots of other things,\u201d Mr. Trump said. \u201cBut when you take a knee \u2014 well, that\u2019s why she lost the election. Honestly, it\u2019s that thinking. That is the reason she lost the election.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">He also urged the N.F.L. to suspend players who knelt during the anthem for multiple games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cThe people of our country are very angry at the N.F.L. All you have to do is look at their ratings and look at their stadiums. You see empty seats where you never saw them before,\u201d Mr. Trump said. \u201cA lot of people are very angry at it. It is highly disrespectful.
