The horse was euthanized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Sign Up for E-News<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">EEE causes inflammation of the brain tissue and has a significantly higher risk of death in horses than West Nile Virus infection. EEE infections in horses are not a significant risk factor for human infection because horses (like humans) are considered to be &#8220;dead-end&#8221; hosts for the mosquito-borne virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Four new cases of equine West Nile virus were also reported in New York. One horse from St. Lawrence County was not vaccinated for the disease but was still alive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Three more horses from Cayuga County, Erie County, and St. Lawrence County were euthanized. Two of the three were not vaccinated and one had been vaccinated but not enough time had elapsed for the vaccination to be protective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">West Nile virus is a viral disease that affects horses\u2019 neurological system. The disease is transmitted by mosquito bite.
