North Korea crisis hits FOOTBALL: Team faces ban as World War 3 fears grow<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

North Korea’s under-19 football team has been banned from traveling to Australia for an Asian Football Confederation championship qualifier following Pyongyang\u2019s repeated nuclear and missile threats.<\/span><\/p>\n

The youth side was scheduled to arrive in Victoria next month after being drawn in a group alongside Australia, Hong Kong and the Northern Mariana Islands.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the Australian government has decided not to grant visas to the North Korean team, forcing officials to reschedule the match at a neutral venue.<\/span><\/p>\n

Foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop cited North Korea’s “illegal nuclear and missile development programmes” when she explained why officials had decided to move the match away from Australian territory.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said: \u201cThe government has decided to not allow the North Korean U19 soccer team to enter Australia for the Asian Football Confederation U19 Championship Qualifiers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHosting the team would be contrary to the Government\u2019s strong opposition to North Korea\u2019s illegal nuclear and missile development programmes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt would also be inconsistent with our efforts to increase diplomatic and economic pressure on Pyongyang to comply with UN Security Council resolutions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Football Federation Australia (FFA) said: \u201cFootball Federation Australia is disappointed that qualifying fixtures for the Asian Football Confederation U-19 Championship … are now likely to be relocated outside Australia due to the Federal Government\u2019s decision not to grant visas to the team from DPR Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFFA respects the Australian Government\u2019s responsibility to make decisions on visa applications.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Australia has been among the stronger critics of North Korea, while Pyongyang has not hesitated at firing back.<\/span><\/p>\n

In August, Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull blasted \u201creckless\u201d Kim Jong-un after North Korea\u2019s state-run news agency KCNA accused the government of \u201cpolitical immaturity\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

An editorial in KCNA read: “Australia followed the US to the Korean War, the Vietnamese War and the ‘war on terrorism’, but heavy loss of lives and assets were all that it got in return.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Countries like Australia that join the military adventure against the DPRK [North Korea], blindly following the US, will never avoid the counter-measures of justice by the DPRK.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a suicidal act of inviting disaster, as it is an illustration of political immaturity, unaware of the seriousness of the current situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Malcolm Turnbull responded to the comments shortly afterwards by urging the international community to “bring North Korea to its senses”.<\/span><\/p>\n

He told local media: “North Korea has shown it has no regard for the welfare of its own population, no regard for the security and good relations with its neighbours and no regard for international law.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We call on all countries to redouble their efforts, including through implementation of agreed UN Security Council resolutions, to bring North Korea to its senses and end its reckless and dangerous threats to the peace of our region and the world.”<\/span><\/p>\n
