Thaler Wins 2017 Nobel Economics Prize:- University of Chicago\u2019s Richard H. Thaler, one of the founders of behavioral finance, was awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Economics for shedding light on how human weaknesses such as a lack of rationality and self-control can ultimately affect markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The 72-year-old \u201chas incorporated psychologically realistic assumptions into analyses of economic decision-making,\u201d the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a statement on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cBy exploring the consequences of limited rationality, social preferences, and lack of self-control, he has shown how these human traits systematically affect individual decisions as well as market outcomes,\u201d it said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Thaler developed the theory of \u201cmental accounting,\u201d explaining how people make financial decisions by creating separate accounts in their minds, focusing on the narrow impact rather than the overall effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">His research on \u201cfairness,\u201d which showed how consumer concerns may stop firms from raising prices in periods of high demand, but not in times of rising costs, has also been influential, according to the Swedish academy. He shed light on how people succumb to short-term temptations, which is why many people fail to plan and save for old age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Thaler\u2019s body of work includes insights on the ways in which limited rationality, social preferences and a lack of self control affect decisions that shape market outcomes. His best-known work, \u201cNudge,\u201d written together with Cass R. Sunstein, explored the concept of tackling societal hurdles by applying behavioral economics. Other books include \u201cQuasi-Rational Economics,\u201d \u201cThe Winner\u2019s Curse: Paradoxes and Anomalies of Economic Life\u201d and \u201cAdvances in Behavioral Finance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Born in New Jersey, Thaler graduated with a bachelor\u2019s degree from the Case Western Reserve University in 1967. He received a master\u2019s degree from the University of Rochester in 1970 and a doctorate in 1974, also from Rochester. Thaler joined the University of Chicago\u2019s Booth School of Business in 1995.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The academy said his work has \u201cbuilt a bridge between the economic and psychological analyses of individual decision-making.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Previous Winners<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Last year\u2019s economics prize went to Harvard University\u2019s Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmstrom of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for their work on contract theory and its role in shaping everything from executive pay to public sector privatizations. Previous laureates have included Milton Friedman, James Tobin, Paul Krugman and Friedrich August von Hayek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Annual prizes for achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, peace and literature were established in the will of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite, who died in 1896. The prize in economic sciences was added by Sweden\u2019s central bank in 1968. The total amount for each of the 2017 prizes is 9 million kronor ($1.1 million), up from 8 million kronor last year. The economics award brings to an end this year\u2019s Nobel prize cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">This Year\u2019s Awards:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The peace prize, which was announced in Oslo on Oct. 6, was awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons \u201cfor its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The literature prize, announced on Oct. 5 in Stockholm, went to \u201cRemains of the Day\u201d author, Kazuo Ishiguro, for developing a style that incorporated &#8220;great emotional force&#8221; and that \u201cuncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world,&#8221; the academy said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The chemistry prize was awarded on Oct. 4 to Jacques Dubochet from Switzerland, Joachim Frank from Germany and Richard Henderson from the U.K. for developing cryo-electron microscopy for the high-resolution structure determination of biomolecules in solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The physics prize went to Rainer Weiss from Germany, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W.
