{"id":46551,"date":"2017-10-09T07:44:53","date_gmt":"2017-10-09T07:44:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=46551"},"modified":"2017-10-09T07:49:20","modified_gmt":"2017-10-09T07:49:20","slug":"uber-suspends-unlicensed-service-in-norway-in-change-of-tack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/technology\/internet\/uber-suspends-unlicensed-service-in-norway-in-change-of-tack.html","title":{"rendered":"Uber suspends unlicensed service in Norway in change of tack"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Uber suspends unlicensed service in Norway in change of tack<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size: 14pt\">Uber suspends unlicensed service in Norway in change of tack:- Uber said on Monday it would suspend its unlicensed service UberPOP in Oslo until Norway introduces new rules, as the U.S. ride-hailing app adopts a more conciliatory tone with national authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size: 14pt\">The move follows a similar one-year suspension in Finland in July to allow a new taxi law to come into effect, however there is no set date for when UberPOP will be reintroduced in Norway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size: 14pt\">The U.S. ride-hailing company has come under fierce pressure from traditional taxi drivers and regulators across Europe who accuse it of unfair competition and skirting traditional licensing rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size: 14pt\">UberPOP has already been suspended in several European capitals, including Paris and Brussels, and Uber was recently humbled when it lost its license to operate in London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size: 14pt\">\u201cWe\u2019ve learned the hard way that we must change as a company in order to serve the millions of riders and drivers who rely on us. With our new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi onboard, it\u2019s a new era for Uber,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size: 14pt\">\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s now time to pause UberPOP in Norway, in order to relaunch under new regulations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size: 14pt\">UberPOP will be paused on Oct. 30, while Uber\u2019s licensed services UberBLACK and UberXXL will continue to operate as normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size: 14pt\">Khosrowshahi took the helm of the company in August, replacing co-founder and former boss Travis Kalanick and has promised change at the $70-billion dollar firm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size: 14pt\">The company said it was encouraged by developments in Norway such as the government\u2019s sharing economy committee which recommended repealing certain provisions related to taxis and an opinion from the EFTA surveillance authority which said Norway\u2019s restrictions on taxi licenses were illegal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size: 14pt\">\u201cNorway deserves modernized laws that encourage innovation and competition without sacrificing what makes the Norwegian model special,\u201d Uber said. \u201cWe hope the government will implement these recommendations soon, so that we can relaunch a new and improved version of the product loved by so many.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000;font-size:
