Texans fall to Chiefs despite 5-TD performance from Deshaun Watson:-Despite having no J.J. Watt \u2013 now again lost for the season \u2013 and no Whitney Mercilus after the game’s first series and distressingly little pass defense all night long, the Texans refused to go down easily, thanks to another electrifying, hope-inspiring performance by rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second of Watson’s touchdown passes to Will Fuller in the second half, covering 48 yards, pulled the Texans to within six points early in the fourth quarter. But Alex Smith countered with a 10-yard shovel pass to Tyreek Hill and Hill later sealed the deal with an 82-yard punt return down the right sideline for a touchdown as the undefeated Chiefs left with a 42-34 victory before 71,835 at NRG Stadium.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watson, the 12th player taken in the draft last spring following his national-champion season at Clemson, also found DeAndre Hopkins for three touchdowns and wound up with five total after throwing for four against the Tennessee Titans last weekend. His nine in two games is unprecedented for a first-year player in the NFL.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watson and Fuller, the Texans’ first-round draft pick in 2016 who had missed the first three games with a broken collarbone that happened during training camp, have linked up for four touchdowns in the past two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n

At 5-0, Kansas City remains the NFL’s only team without a loss. The Texans, who also lost starting strong safety Corey Moore late to a concussion, fell to 2-3 with the 0-5 Cleveland Browns coming to town next Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Texans have scored 124 points in their last three games, surpassing 30 in each after never scoring more than 27 with Brock Osweiler at quarterback in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watt, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year who had missed all but three starts last season because of a back injury, went down on the final play of Kansas City’s ponderous 15-play, 64-yard opening drive to a Harrison Butker field goal that set the game’s tone, taking more than eight minutes off the clock.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Chiefs would run two more plays in the first half \u2013 43 \u2013 than the Tennessee Titans did in four quarters in the Texans’ 57-14 romp a week ago. The Texans held the ball for barely eight minutes during the first two quarters in falling behind 23-7.<\/span><\/p>\n

In obvious pain, Watt had to be helped from the field and was later seen getting into an ambulance outside the Texans’ locker room. The team announced that he had suffered a tibial plateau fracture, a significant injury. Mercilus, who emerged as the Texans’ sack leader last season with Watt sidelined, left with undisclosed chest injury.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I feel terrible for the guy,” Texans head coach Bill O’Brien said of Watt. “But he’s an amazing human being. He will work extremely hard to be back to play for this football team.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Asked about Mercilus, O’Brien replied, “There’s concern.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Before Watt left the field, he spoke briefly with Watson, who said Watt told him, “Just keep fighting. That’s pretty much it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the Chiefs were missing two of their starting offensive linemen, center Mitch Morse and right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, Smith had no problem picking the Texans apart with his arm despite sensational rookie running back Kareem Hunt being largely kept in check before he got untracked late. His 23-yard run proved pivotal on the 6-play, 70-yard scoring drive Smith capped with a 10-yard scoring pass to De’Anthony Thomas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hunt ran for 107 yards on 29 carries. He came in averaging almost 165 yards per game and nearly 7.4 yards per carry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smith passed for 324 yards, completing 29 of 37 passes without an interception. Kansas City had 450 yards of offense and never turned the ball over.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watson was 16-for-31 for 261 yards.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kansas City took its 16-point halftime lead after Smith directed a 7-play, 75-yard drive in the final two minutes, countering the momentum the Texans had gained from an impressive, Watson-led 8-play, 75-yard drive capped by an 8-yard scoring strike to Hopkins.<\/span><\/p>\n

That came with 1:49 left, though, giving Smith, the NFL’s highest-rated passer with a 124.2 rating through the season’s four weeks, plenty of time to answer. The crucial play was a 26-yard completion to tight end Travis Kelce that was augmented by an unnecessary-roughness penalty on safety Marcus Gilchrist, giving the Chiefs a first down at the Texans 15. Five plays \u2013 and a roughing-the-passer penalty on Jadeveon Clowney \u2013 later, Smith flipped a 4-yard scoring pass to Charcandrick West.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smith had also found West for an 8-yard touchdown with 5:45 left, completing a 9-play, 62-yard drive. The Chiefs’ Butker kicked five field goals, 35-, 42- and 41-yarders in the first half before adding a 35-yarder in the first minute of the fourth quarter and a 49-yarder with 1:08 remaining.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watson’s fifth touchdown pass \u2013 and the third to Hopkins \u2013 came as time ran out. Watson then carried for the two-point conversion himself.<\/span><\/p>\n
