Elon Musk delays self-driving truck to focus on Model 3, Puerto Rico power:- SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 Elon Musk has so many irons in the fire, you can’t see the fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO tweeted Friday that he is delaying the unveiling of a self-driving truck in order to focus his attention on smoothing out Model 3 production issues and helping devastated Puerto Rico switch over to solar power.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Tesla Semi unveil now Nov 16,” Musk tweeted, pushing it back around three weeks from the original Oct. 26 event. “Diverting resources to fix Model 3 bottlenecks & increase battery production for Puerto Rico & other affected areas.”<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday, Musk had a brief Twitter exchange with Puerto Rico’s 38-year-old governor, Ricardo Rossello, who encouraged Musk to help rebuild the hurricane-lashed island using Tesla’s solar technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Musk bought SolarCity in the summer of 2016 and wants to create a one-stop shopping platform that sells roofing tiles that are solar panels, in-home energy storage units called PowerWalls, and electric cars. Musk also is building out a huge Gigafactory east of Reno, Nev., for the purpose of building and reducing the cost of battery cells.<\/span><\/p>\n

“@elonMusk Let’s talk,” Rossello tweeted. “Do you want to show the world the power and scalability of your #TeslaTechnologies? PR could be that flagship project.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Not one to back down from a challenge \u2014 Musk’s ideas seem to have few bounds, from colonizing Mars to developing a high-speed transportation system called hyperloop \u2014 the South African-born entrepreneur responded: “I would be happy to talk. Hopefully, Tesla can be helpful.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Trucking has been seen by some entrepreneurs and industry experts as a prime candidate for autonomous vehicles because highway driving is much easier to tackle than complex urban situations involving pedestrians, cyclists and construction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides smaller startups pushing the same trucking tech, Uber famously dove headlong into the space with its now calamitous acquisition of Otto in August 2016 for around $680 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

Otto was the brainchild of former Google self-driving car engineer Anthony Levandowski, who was later sued by Googe’s self-driving car company, Waymo, for steeling trade secrets and passing them along to Uber. Uber has denied that it’s light ranging and detection tech (LiDAR) uses any Google trade secrets. A trial is pending.<\/span><\/p>\n

Otto has become a part of Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group, but the company hasn’t showcased it self-driving trucks lately and has started a new division called Uber Freight, which is focused on using Uber’s ride-hailing tech to match truckers with loads.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Musk has many projects underway, his obsession of the moment remains the launch of Tesla’s Model 3 sedan, an entry-level product (base priced at $33,000, or a third of a loaded Model S or X) that generated an avalanche of deposits and carries the weight of the companies success on its svelte fenders.<\/span><\/p>\n

Musk has said that Model 3 should send Tesla’s production numbers to 500,000 a year, or about quadruple figures that exclude the new car.<\/span><\/p>\n

But he has also braced for “production hell,” as he told Tesla employees who assembled at the factory plant in Fremont this summer to launch the Model 3. So far, only a few hundred cars have been delivered, largely to employees who in turn will pass along production feedback to engineers and production line supervisors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Musk also has been grappling with lawsuits and moves to start a union at the Fremont plant, after some employees accused the company of workers developing repetitive stress injuries due to both the pace and ergonomics of Tesla’s factory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tesla has denied the claims, and has fought against a union presence at Fremont, arguing that it had among the lowest injury rates of any automaker.<\/span><\/p>\n
