{"id":45908,"date":"2017-10-05T07:11:36","date_gmt":"2017-10-05T07:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=45908"},"modified":"2017-10-05T07:11:36","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T07:11:36","slug":"u-s-business-groups-say-wto-unable-to-curb-many-chinese-trade-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/business\/u-s-business-groups-say-wto-unable-to-curb-many-chinese-trade-practices.html","title":{"rendered":"U.S. business groups say WTO unable to curb many Chinese trade practices"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">U.S. business groups say WTO unable to curb many Chinese trade practices<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">U.S. business groups say WTO unable to curb many Chinese trade practices:- U.S. business groups expressed frustration on Wednesday with what they said are China\u2019s efforts to tilt the economic playing field in favor of domestic companies, adding that World Trade Organization rules are insufficient to police all of Beijing\u2019s trade practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">U.S. companies face increasing threats from Chinese investment rules, industrial policies, subsidies to state-owned enterprises, excess manufacturing capacity, cybersecurity regulations and forced technology transfers, the groups told a public hearing held by the U.S. Trade Representative\u2019s office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The session will influence an annual report on China\u2019s WTO compliance by the U.S. Trade Representative\u2019s office as well as a USTR investigation into China\u2019s intellectual property practices that could lead to imposition of trade sanctions by President Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Josh Kallmer, senior vice president of global policy at the Information Technology Industry Council, said China had woven a \u201ctapestry\u201d of rules and policies that places foreign companies at a disadvantage and incentivizes the transfer of technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">\u201cIt just in general puts a thumb on the competitive scale in a way that significantly and profoundly affects U.S.-based and foreign companies,\u201d said Kallmer, who was representing a coalition of technology groups from semiconductors to software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">The concerns are not new. They were highlighted in the USTR\u2019s last report to Congress on China\u2019s WTO compliance issued on Jan, 1, 2017, and raised in subsequent meetings by Trump administration officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">USTR Assistant Secretary Edward Gresser told the hearing that there was a growing recognition that WTO rules did not cover all of China\u2019s practices viewed as unfair.
