Vice President Mike Pence pushes GOP tax reform plan during Phoenix visit:- Vice President Mike Pence visited Phoenix on Tuesday where he met with Gov. Doug Ducey and Arizona business leaders to discuss Republican efforts to pass tax reform.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was scheduled to attend a political fundraiser at an undisclosed location Tuesday night.<\/span><\/p>\n

After landing at Sky Harbor International Airport at about 2:30 p.m., Pence\u2019s first stop was Ajo Al\u2019s restaurant in north-central Phoenix. There, he and Ducey pitched Republicans’ tax proposal to a pre-selected group of small-business owners and supporters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The leaders said the plan would lower tax rates for small businesses, allowing owners to hire more employees and pay higher wages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence said despite the week\u2019s challenging events, from the hurricane\u2019s aftermath in Puerto Rico to the mass shooting in Las Vegas, he wanted to visit Phoenix to talk about the president\u2019s plan to \u201creduce the burden of excessive taxation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt really is about competitiveness,\u201d Pence said from a podium between booths of diners. \u201cIt really is about raising wages and being able to do more good in the community. But we\u2019re going to need your help to get there folks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Daniel Scarpinato, Ducey’s spokesman, said the governor wants to see the GOP’s tax-reform proposals become law.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The governor supports tax reform and believes there’s a real potential to further ignite the American economy,” Scarpinato said. “And that would be a huge benefit to Arizona.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The GOP plan aims to double the standard income-tax deduction; consolidate the current seven tax brackets into three \u2014 12 percent, 25 percent and 35 percent; and reduce the corporate tax rate to 20 percent from 35 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Democrats have blasted Republicans’ framework for tax reform, saying it could add to the federal deficit and jeopardize programs such as Medicare.<\/span><\/p>\n

Business owners weigh in<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence and Ducey worked the room, speaking to about a half-dozen families with businesses, from auto shop owners to insurance salespeople. Each table was set with two extra drinks: an iced tea for Ducey and an Arnold Palmer for Pence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gregory Whelan, a pediatric dentist from Peoria, told Pence that a lower tax rate would allow him to increase wages for his office staff.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt really does mean something to mom-and-pop operations just to make ends meet,\u201d Whelan said.<\/span><\/p>\n

One business owner asked Pence about rising health-care costs, saying the Affordable Care Act has raised rates to the point she cannot fully cover her workers\u2019 insurance costs anymore. Republican efforts to repeal the act have stalled.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence responded, saying that while Trump is focused on tax cuts this fall \u201cwe\u2019re coming back to (health care).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In an early stop, Pence gave blood at a donation bank in north Phoenix.<\/span><\/p>\n

Citing the shooting victims in Las Vegas, Pence said it’s important every American “do their part” to help. He sat for about 30 minutes as a technician drew blood from his left arm.<\/span><\/p>\n

The $5,400-per-person evening fundraiser benefits the Trump-Pence campaign. Also attending are Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel and National Finance Chairman Steve Wynn, the casino magnate, and Ducey.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence is scheduled to stay in the Valley overnight before departing Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n
