\u2018Bath Crashers\u2019 host wants to inspire you, but says DIYers should be \u2018really real with yourself\u2019 :- Matt Muenster is in a bit of a predicament over on the DIY Network. The network is, of course, about inspiring people to tackle home projects on their own, but Muenster\u2019s area of expertise is bathrooms, and those are not the most DIY-able rooms in the house, he admits.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe bathroom is a tricky room,\u201d said Muenster, host of \u201cBath Crashers,\u201d in a recent phone interview. \u201cWe are a DIY culture now, and DIY Network is partially to blame. TV makes it look easy. … I try to communicate that you need to be really real with yourself about your skill level, and if you say to yourself \u2018I think I can do plumbing,\u2019 then you can\u2019t do plumbing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s one of the big tips that I give everyone: Know when it\u2019s time to leave it up to the pros. Plumbing and electrical, where there are code issues involved \u2013 that\u2019s pro stuff.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But that doesn\u2019t mean the bathroom is a DIY-free zone. There are things you can do in there, and Muenster \u2013 appearing at the Southern Ideal Home Show in Raleigh this weekend \u2013 really wants you to try.\u201cI\u2019m convinced everyone can tile,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m convinced everyone can do some simple wood-working like building a mirror frame. I really do feel like that\u2019s a teachable thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Muenster says the tile professionals know the tricks of the trade and can do it a lot faster, but it\u2019s a manageable project. \u201cYou can take a tile course or watch some YoutTube videos and really, you can do a pretty good job of it,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want everyone to be inspired. That\u2019s part of the job \u2013 to inspire and instill confidence and make people feel like, \u2018Yeah, I\u2019m ready to do this.\u2019 But I also feel a responsibility to be real with people as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Muenster will appear four times during the three-day home show this weekend. He\u2019ll give a presentation at each session and wants people to come armed with questions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll share what I\u2019ve learned, and mostly it\u2019s about pushing the envelope, how we use these spaces,\u201d he said. \u201cMistakes I\u2019ve made, what to avoid \u2013 and plant some ideas in your head about how you can really change how you live your life by some decisions you can make in that space.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
