Beloved 94-year-old crossing guard gets birthday surprise after health scare<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Beloved 94-year-old crossing guard gets birthday surprise after health scare :- Luther Walker, a 94-year-old crossing guard at Mitchell Elementary School in Dallas, is beloved by many in his community.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe is an institution,\u201d Principal Bob Farris told ABC News. \u201cHe\u2019s a bright light in everybody\u2019s day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Walker, a proud World War II veteran, has had a long and plentiful life.<\/span><\/p>\n

He worked for years in a bakery, then moved on to the YMCA, but he said being a crossing guard has, by far, been the most fulfilling.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe kids are wonderful,\u201d Walker told ABC News. \u201cEver since I\u2019ve been here, I\u2019ve never had [any] problem with the kids. I got attached to the children and they got attached to me. I enjoy working with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Walker has been a crossing guard at the school for 20 years, reliably greeting the students every day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey all like to be around me,\u201d he said with a laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n

So when he didn\u2019t show up for work one day last week, everyone was worried.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole community was so concerned about him,\u201d said Farris.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople were really, genuinely upset,\u201d Kelli Jones, the parent of a 4th grader at the school, recalled. \u201cThe kids kept asking questions about where he was and were very upset.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While out on a drive, Walker had gotten dehydrated and lost his way.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was just turned around,\u201d said Walker. \u201cI don\u2019t know what happened. It seemed like a dream to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He is feeling better now, and to show their appreciation, families from the school surprised him for his birthday.<\/span><\/p>\n

They showered him with gift cards, artwork from the students and even paid his rent.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was wonderful,\u201d said an overwhelmed Walker. \u201cIt was really so nice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve enjoyed this birthday better than any birthday I\u2019ve ever had,\u201d he added. \u201cIt was a day I\u2019ll never forget.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Walker has no plans to retire any time soon, but realizes \u201canything can happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI might have to give it up, but so far, I feel alright,\u201d he proudly said. \u201cI\u2019ll wait to see what happens in another year or so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
