Melania Trump’s made-in-Italy dress undermines POTUS made-in-USA tweet:- First lady Melania Trump’s fondness for Euro couture is being used against her husband, who posted a picture of her wearing a made-in-Italy dress in a Labor Day tweet about his made-in-America values.<\/span><\/p>\n

Naturally, it was noticed on Twitter, where Mrs. Trump’s wardrobe choices lately have been weaponized by President Trump’s critics to bash her, him or his policies, fairly or not.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, it was Mrs. Trump’s sky-high traveling shoes for trips to the flood zone left behind by Hurricane Harvey \u2014 even though she changed on Air Force One into sensible sneakers for her public appearances in Texas and Louisiana.<\/span><\/p>\n

By Monday, some on Twitter had moved on to mocking a tweet posted by POTUS on Labor Day, celebrating his support for everything made in America.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We are building our future with American hands, American labor, American iron, <\/span>aluminum and steel. Happy #LaborDay!,” his tweet read.<\/span><\/p>\n

He included a picture of himself with his wife from the Congressional Picnic at the White House in June: She is wearing a sleeveless frock by designer Mary Katrantzou featuring a lattice-pattern in vibrant hues.<\/span><\/p>\n

Katrantzou was born in Greece and is based in London; the Osmond Lion Stripe dress was made in Italy, according to the Saks Fifth Avenue website where it is sold out. (The $1,900 dress is still available, on sale for $456, at the Orchard Mile website.)<\/span><\/p>\n

It may be that the president had no idea when he posted the picture that his wife’s dress was not made in America. But the tweet left him vulnerable to accusations of hypocrisy, especially since some of the apparel in daughter Ivanka Trump’s fashion line is made in China.<\/span><\/p>\n

“And American lies. Even Melania’s $2,000+ dress is made in Italy! How stupid do you think we are?,” tweeted Arialis Miren.<\/span><\/p>\n

The origins of a first lady’s wardrobe have been fodder for criticism since before Melania Trump was born (in Slovenia, in 1970). Former first lady Jackie Kennedy loved French couture (especially Chanel) so much that once in office President Kennedy came under pressure from unions that supported him to ensure she wore more American-made clothes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Former first lady Michelle Obama wore a mix of European-made and American-made styles depending on the occasion, but she sent eyebrows up once for wearing $540 sneakers to an appearance at a food bank.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs. Trump, 47, a former fashion model and billionaire’s wife whose customary attire includes haute couture and sky-high heels with sky-high prices, has been photographed often in European fashions, especially on foreign trips when it’s seen as a gesture to the host country (British royals do this on foreign trips all the time).<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs. Trump had no comment about this latest controversy. Last week, her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, told reporters it was “sad” some people were focused more on her shoes than on the victims of Hurricane Harvey.<\/span><\/p>\n
