Man dies days after being shot trying to ambush rival in Queens while wearing dress, wig<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

A gunman who tried to sneak up on his prey by disguising himself as a woman \u2014 sporting a dress and a wig \u2014 was mortally wounded late Friday in Queens.<\/span><\/p>\n

Terrence Payne, 21, approached a group of people on 164th St. near 107th Ave. in Jamaica, police sources said. He had a purse in one hand and a gun in the other, the sources said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Witnesses heard gunshots around 9:30 p.m. and saw Payne run away. The wig fell off his head as he tried to escape the gunfire, sources said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Investigators believe two of Payne\u2019s friends picked the wounded man up in a black car and dropped him off \u2014 dressed only in sneakers and boxer shorts \u2014 in front of Jamaica Hospital. The 6-foot Payne was shot in the leg and the bullet nicked his femoral artery, which caused him to lose a lot of blood, police said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police found five shell casings at the scene, all from the same caliber gun. They also found the wig and the purse Payne was carrying hanging on a fence nearby. No arrests have been made, police said.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Monday morning, Payne\u2019s mother made the gut-wrenching decision to take her son off life support.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was shocked. Of course I was devastated,\u201d the mom, Lashawn Steven, told the Daily News on Tuesday. “His organs were shutting down so I made the decision that they couldn’t do nothing else for him. I made the decision to take him off the machine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Payne was the oldest of her three sons, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe loved life and he was very popular. He loves his family. He loved to have fun,” she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Steven said her son was interested in construction and wanted to start his own business. She knew nothing about the disguise sources say Payne was wearing.<\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t clear whether Payne fired any of the shots during the Friday clash.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police, meanwhile, are investigating whether Payne\u2019s troubled past had anything to do with the shooting. He was arrested nine times since 2011 for marijuana possession, robbery and weapons possession.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was released from prison on June 15 after spending four months in prison on a gun possession conviction. He was supposed to be on parole until 2022, a New York State Department of Corrections spokesman said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The gunplay comes as the city marks a 20% drop in shootings across the five boroughs.<\/span><\/p>\n

As of Sunday, 501 shootings had been investigated \u2014 127 fewer than the 628 reported this time a year earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n
