Firefighters adopt puppy after saving him from burning apartment:-\u00a0One lucky puppy who was rescued from a burning apartment is now being adopted by the very firefighters who saved his life.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

When the firefighters of the City of Newburgh Fire Department in New York were called to the second floor of a three-story apartment building in downtown Newburgh on August 3, they were told by residents that two puppies were left behind, Lt. Timothy Dexter told ABC News.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We kept it from spreading,” he said, referring to the blaze, “but two puppies were missing. I went in to search for the puppies and checked the whole front rooms.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Dexter, who’s been with the department for 10 years, said another firefighter Chris Baum found the first puppy in a back room.<\/span><\/p>\n

“He handed it to me. I ran it out and we tried giving it CPR. It did not survive,” he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

After returning to the fire-stricken apartment to search for the second pit bull, the crew decided to go into the room where the fire originated. They didn’t think anything could’ve possibly survived until Lt. Anthony Muhammad heard a “squeal,” firefighter Jimmy Moore told ABC News.<\/span><\/p>\n

The firefighters found little Titus hiding underneath the bed. “The bed … protected him somehow,” Dexter said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The owners of the pit bull, believed to be between 6 and 8 weeks old, had insisted on the firefighters taking the dog to the local veterinarian and keeping him, because they were unsure they could give the dog proper medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

Luckily, Dexter and Moore are dog lovers, who each own one dog, and live five minutes away from each other in New Windsor. So the men decided to co-adopt the puppy pit bull.<\/span><\/p>\n

Titus’ veterinarian diagnosed the dog with first- and second-degree burns on his entire body from his head, to his paws and shoulders.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, he’s adjusting to his new life with his new dog dads, the two said.<\/span><\/p>\n

“He gets along well with his other two brothers,” Dexter said. “He actually kind of takes charge of [Moore’s dog named] Taz. He bullies him a little bit.”<\/span><\/p>\n

After nearly two weeks of recovery, Moore said their dog is “doing good now,” despite being on four different medicines.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dexter added that the only problem they’re having is potty-training him.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It\u2019s going to be a little bit more difficult to potty train him thanks to his burns but we\u2019re working with that,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n
