{"id":38199,"date":"2017-08-02T07:22:23","date_gmt":"2017-08-02T07:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=38199"},"modified":"2017-08-02T07:22:23","modified_gmt":"2017-08-02T07:22:23","slug":"more-than-a-third-of-us-adults-prescribed-opioids-in-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/health\/medical\/more-than-a-third-of-us-adults-prescribed-opioids-in-2015.html","title":{"rendered":"More than a third of US adults prescribed opioids in 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;color: #000000\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">More than a third of US adults prescribed opioids in 2015<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">More than a third of US adults prescribed opioids in 2015:- The United States needs to curb excessive opioid prescribing and improve access to pain management techniques, suggests a new government study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Researchers found that more than one third of U.S. adults were prescribed the medications in 2015 and many also misused the drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">&#8220;A very large proportion and large number of adults use these medications in a given year,&#8221; said study author Dr. Wilson Compton, deputy director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse in Bethesda, Maryland. &#8220;I was still a bit surprised that 38 percent or about 92 million people used prescription opioids in 2015.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Compton and his colleagues write in the Annals of Internal Medicine that limited data on the prescription of opioids and their abuse are available despite the number of deaths from drug overdoses in the U.S. having quadrupled between 1999 and 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">For the new study, the researchers analyzed data from 51,200 adults collected in 2015 during face-to-face interviews for the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Based on those interviews, the researchers estimate about 38 percent of U.S. adults were prescribed an opioid in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">People who were between ages 18 and 49 years, men or college graduates were less likely to have been prescribed opioids than those who were older, female or not college graduates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">About 5 percent of U.S. adults were misusing opioids by not following a doctor&#8217;s orders. Misuse could range from not using the drugs as directed or using the them without a prescription.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The researchers also estimate that about 1 percent of adults, or about 1.9 million Americans, had an opioid use disorder. A person with a use disorder may experience withdrawal when they stop opioids, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Opioid misuse and use disorders were more common among people with lower family incomes, without health insurance or without jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">About 64 percent of the survey participants who had misused opioids said they did so most recently to relieve pain. About 41 percent said they got the drugs from family or friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Based on data from private insurance, Compton told Reuters Health, future surveys may show a decline in opioid prescriptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">&#8220;We have seen since 2010 about a 20 percent decline, but that&#8217;s not a major reduction,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Dr. Karen Lasser, who wrote an editorial accompanying the new study, said people should know the risks associated with opioids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">&#8220;Part of the problem has to do with the broken state of primary care,&#8221; said Lasser, of Boston Medical Center and the Boston University School of Medicine. &#8220;People are having trouble accessing primary care due to the shortage of primary care providers.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">She told Reuters Health the problem is at multiple levels, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">&#8220;We developed a website called MyTopCare.org that has a portal for patients, prescribers and pharmacists,&#8221; Lasser said. &#8220;We have a stepped approach to managing pain.
