JetBlue eyes JFK Terminal 6 for future expansion with partners<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

JetBlue eyes JFK Terminal 6 for future expansion with partners:-JetBlue Airways executives said Tuesday that considerations for renovating Terminal 6 and perhaps 7 at New York\u2019s John F. Kennedy Airport are for future expansion and partnerships, rather than an immediate need for more space.<\/span><\/p>\n

JFK is so popular there are federal limits on how many flights can take off and land each day. But JetBlue recently finished renovating Terminal 5 at its hometown airport, so the request for qualifications (RFQ) to developers last week raised eyebrows about what would occupy the space in the renovated terminals.<\/span><\/p>\n

JetBlue is taking advantage of exclusive rights with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the airport, to develop Terminal 6 through the mid-2020s, CEO Robin Hayes told investment analysts on an earnings call.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur aim is to create a world-class customer experience while maintaining our cost advantage and maximizing value of our airport assets,\u201d Hayes said. \u201cWe look forward to working with the development committee, the Port Authority and possibly other airlines to strengthen our leadership position at JFK, which has been a critical part of our success in New York City.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Changes won\u2019t come overnight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have enough space at the moment” in Terminal 5, said Stephen Priest, JetBlue\u2019s chief financial officer.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Terminal 6 is \u201cvaluable real estate\u201d in \u201can incredibly congested market,\u201d he said. Studying development opportunities for Terminal 6 and 7 is \u201creally about securing our long-term future,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

JetBlue, which flies heavily along the East Coast, has been studying flying to Europe. That prospect sparked questions about how soon JetBlue would get new Airbus A321 that could allow the airline to fly across the Atlantic, and whether it would need a customs facilities for international travelers as part of Terminal 6 renovations.<\/span><\/p>\n

But executives were cagey. Priest said negotiations with Airbus built flexibility into deliveries, with the airline able to convert 321neo planes into A321LRs — or “long range” versions of the jet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe LR would be an aircraft that’s available towards the end of 2019 and we’re still assessing that at the moment,\u201d Priest said. \u201cIn terms of optionality, if we did indeed decide to do any conversion rights within the LR, we would have the opportunity to do that in terms of contractual rights toward the end of this year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Priest said it\u2019s \u201cvery, very early days\u201d to be mapping customs facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re talking about something that would be coming to fruition in the middle of next decade,\u201d Priest said. \u201cSo no plans as yet. But obviously as things progress, we’ll continue to k eep the market informed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

JetBlue doesn\u2019t expect the finance the Terminal 6 project on its own.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI fully expect to go through partnership,\u201d Priest said. \u201cPart of the RFQ was really start looking at that partner who can bring some financing to the party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
