4 SURPRISING THINGS YOU CAN ONLY LEARN BY TRAVELING SOLO:-Women are hitting the road in record numbers\u2014whether or not they have a travel companion. Why wait until you find someone with the exact same interests, schedule, and finances to go adventuring?<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve learned this firsthand\u2014as a travel writer, I\u2019ve spent much of the past decade by myself in far-flung places. I know I\u2019m a better person because of it: more patient, more confident, and way more in touch with myself. It makes it easier to make friends. What could be wrong with that?<\/span><\/p>\n

Okay, things could go wrong. There\u2019s a reason that fear stands between many women and travel. There\u2019ll be lonely moments, and there\u2019ll be shady situations. You need to be smart\u2014but that doesn\u2019t mean you shouldn\u2019t explore.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTraveling isn\u2019t always easy,\u201d says Kelly Lewis, the founder of the Women\u2019s Travel Fest conference, the female tour company Damesly, and Go! Girl Guides, which offer female travelers solid advice (think: avoid the beach at night, establish boundaries with men, look for other women, be aware of who\u2019s around you\u2014and your bag). \u201cIt\u2019ll push you, check your ego, and stretch your comfort level\u2026but it\u2019s always surprising. Ultimately, it makes you realize just how strong and capable you are. I have thoughts like, Girl, you climbed Machu Picchu on your period\u2014you got this!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are 4 life lessons traveling by yourself can teach you, according to women who seriously love exploring on their own.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"1.<\/p>\n


\n1. You can\u2019t control everything
\n<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u201cWhat keeps women from traveling is fear,\u201d says Lewis. \u201cFear of the unknown, the unexpected, that everything won\u2019t work out exactly as planned. Being okay with that\u2014and doing it anyway\u2014is crucial. We can\u2019t control everything, and that\u2019s part of the adventure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The travel guru experienced this firsthand while at a train station in Indie. \u201cI wasted most of the day trying to buy tickets that I ultimately couldn\u2019t get,\u201d she recalls. \u201cIt was hot and it took hours and was unsuccessful\u2014but then I stopped myself, smiled, and laughed. That was what was in the cards for me that day, and I had to be okay with that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"2.<\/p>\n

2. Sometimes, you just need to do it
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nPaula Froelich, the former editor of Yahoo Travel and the producer of the (hilarious) blog and video series A Broad Abroad, says, \u201cI always wanted to travel [in my early 20s], but there was an innate fear of actually doing it. I\u2019d talk about it, plan, then make an excuse\u2026until one day, I finally went. I moved to England with $600\u2014and it was so much easier than I\u2019d tricked myself into believing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She stayed a couple years before returning to New York, and says that today, she fully embraces a trigger-happy travel ethos. \u201cIf we take too long to do something, we psych ourselves out. Now I tell people I\u2019m doing something before I do it to make sure I actually do it. Yes, I still psych myself out and, yes, I still get intimidated. But pretend you\u2019re a Nike slogan: Just do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Being your own BFF is awesome
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nIn normal life, \u201cwe\u2019re never alone\u2014never quiet, never able to actually sit and think, Who the hell am I?\u201d says Froelich, an intrepid traveler who\u2019s taken solo trips to places like Afghanistan to go skiing.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s what makes party-of-one adventures so fulfilling. \u201cThere\u2019s beauty and power in loneliness and embracing the fear of being lonely\u2014you can actually sit with yourself,\u201d adds Froelich. \u201cI always quote [the movie] Buckaroo Banzai: \u2018Wherever you go, there you are.\u2019 If you only have yourself for company, then you have to get to know yourself and reconcile things you haven\u2019t thought about in years. You become your own best friend\u2014something that eludes a lot of us. It\u2019s scary, it\u2019s weird, and it\u2019s wonderful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Never underestimate the kindness of strangers
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u201cThe world is mostly safe, and people are mostly good. Don\u2019t be afraid to talk to strangers: The more people know you, the more they look out for you,\u201d says Lewis. \u201cI\u2019ve been in tough situations, but each time, someone\u2014seemingly out of nowhere\u2014has come to my rescue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Like the time, on a long bus ride in Bolivia, she had befriended her seatmate\u2014and when the bus started to leave without her after a bathroom break, that new friend made the driver turn around to let her back on board. \u201cHad I not been open to chatting with her, my fate would\u2019ve been really different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
