Seattle turf war: Delta expands on more Alaska Air routes<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Seattle turf war: Delta expands on more Alaska Air routes:-The pace of the Seattle showdown between Delta and Alaska Airlines appears to have slowed since this winter, but the turf war is not over.<\/span><\/p>\n

Delta on Tuesday announced another expansion of service from Seattle, adding a new route to Medford, Ore., and an additional flight on its existing service to Austin. The new flights will begin Oct. 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

To Medford, Delta Connection affiliate SkyWest will operate one daily round-trip flight on 76-seat Embraer E175 jets. Delta\u2019s Austin-Seattle flights are on 126-seat Airbus A319 jets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Delta hinted at its competition on both routes.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the Austin service, Delta noted in a statement that its second daily flight to Austin will \u201cprovide the only morning departure from Seattle.\u201d Currently, Alaska and Southwest are the only other carriers flying non-stop on the route. But Southwest will end its non-stop Seattle-Austin flights in early September. Alaska Airlines operates two daily flights to Austin, though both of its Seattle departures leave after noon local time (around 12:20 p.m. and 11:15 p.m.).<\/span><\/p>\n

And with its new Medford service, Delta pointed out that the city will become its \u201cninth Pacific Northwest destination from Seattle and complements recently added service to Eugene and Redmond, Ore., giving customers access to the airline\u2019s growing network from Seattle.\u201d All of Delta\u2019s Pacific Northwest routes added this decade compete head-to-head with Alaska Airlines, which has long been the dominant carrier for flights within the Northwest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Delta\u2019s expansion of service that competes with Alaska highlights the intense competition for Seattle between the airlines that previously were close partners. Earlier this decade, Delta and Alaska Airlines had codeshare and frequent-flier pacts that \u2013 in part \u2013 allowed the carriers to funnel passengers to each other\u2019s flights.<\/span><\/p>\n

Initially it was a symbiotic relationship, allowing Delta to tap Alaska Airlines\u2019 Seattle hub to feed its growing number of overseas flights from the city. But Delta eventually moved to create its own hub in Seattle, one that now competes with most of Alaska Airlines\u2019 bread-and-butter routes from its longtime base. Alaska has responded aggressively, growing its own schedule in Seattle and going on the offensive with new routes of its own from Delta\u2019s Salt Lake City hub.<\/span><\/p>\n

The back-and-forth between the two carriers has slowed somewhat in recent months, but the new Delta flights show the jockeying for Seattle isn\u2019t over.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the airport itself, the competition has been a boon. Passenger traffic at Seattle-Tacoma International has soared since the turf war began. The airport has set several consecutive annual passenger records, and another appears likely for 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Delta officials touted the company\u2019s latest new offerings from Seattle.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur Austin flight has been tremendously popular, and with this additional flight, we offer Seattle customers the best schedule options for business travel with a morning and afternoon departure from both cities,\u201d John Caldwell, Delta\u2019s Vice President \u2013 Seattle, says in a statement. \u201cAdditionally, our new service to Medford means we now can offer customers access to nine daily destinations throughout the Pacific Northwest from our Sea-Tac hub.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
